Betty is survived by her children Barbara (Bohdan), Brian (Meladean), David, and Julie (Chris), and granddaughters Stephania, Claire, and Lily. She is also survived by her brother Neil and sisters Jean and Heather in Ontario, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her parents Agnes and David (Ray) Robertson, her sisters Helen, Marjorie, Barbara, Sharon, Andrea, and brothers Bob and Jim.
The third of eleven children, Betty was born in Trenton, Ontario on January 2, 1929. After graduating from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in Toronto, Betty began her nursing career in California. She was a full-time homemaker when her children were young, then returned to nursing after the family moved to Lethbridge in 1968.
A devoted Calgary Flames fan and avid golfer, Betty was a long-time member at Magrath Golf Club. She also participated in the Moonlight Run in Indian Battle Park until age 74, and skated regularly at local arenas until age 89. Betty loved the outdoors and often visited Waterton Lakes National Park. She also enjoyed fine dining and attending opera in Calgary and ballet in Toronto.
From an early age, Betty loved to read and instilled that love in her children. She was two-term member of the Lethbridge Public Library Board (1987-93), and a founding and two-term member of the Chinook Arch Regional Library Board (1992-98). She was also a founding member of the Friends of Lethbridge Public Library and later the Friends of Chinook Arch. Betty was absolutely thrilled in 2007 when the Coalhurst Public Library joined Chinook Arch, fulfilling her personal dream of having the very best library services available to all residents of southwestern Alberta.
Betty was also an avid knitter, an honorary lifetime member at the Nord-Bridge Seniors Centre, a Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization member for many years, and a longtime volunteer at Assumption Church and the Italian Club. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
The family extends sincere thanks to Dr. Dumebi Anthony for her wise and compassionate care, and to Nancy Hamilton for her many kindnesses to Betty throughout her life, especially during the last several years.
In lieu of flowers, please consider supporting the Chinook Arch Regional Library.
A Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held at a later date.
