Mabel LeDrew Obituary
Mabel Oake LeDrew passed peacefully away surrounded by family on November 9, 2024, at the age of 95. She was born on Fogo Island, moved to Bishop’s Falls, and
later to St. John’s. She was proud to say that she her heart belonged to the north side of Fogo and that she was the older sister of Bishop Payne. Mabel was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Sister, friend of many, and her family meant everything to her.
Mabel was the Sister of Stewart Payne and Mother of eight children George (Ellen) Barnes, Janet (Tom) Gill, Dave Barnes, Joyce (Wes) Smith, Bob (Linda) Barnes, Diane (Jamie) Roberts, Shirley (Duane) Lucas, & Velma (Shawn) Pike. Grandmother to Colleen Smith, Dwayne Gill, Carolyn Greene, Tara King, Melissa Foley, Chad Barnes, John Butler, Jeffery Barnes, Jennifer Barnes, Jordan Smith, Nathan Smith, Tanya Barnes, Brenda Barnes, Lucas Roberts, Michael Roberts, Ashley Lucas and Tyler Pike. Great-Grandmother to Noah & Ben Smith, Carson & Brook Gill, Thomas Greene, Kyle & Brett King, Mckenna & Violet Foley, Nora & Jack Barnes, Kyle, Samantha, Katie, Ethen & Eric Butler, Mathew & Marcus Barnes and Laken Barnes. She will be fondly remembered by the four LeDrew boys: Ron, Brad, Trace, & Trevor LeDrew. Special extended family Cory, Clay, Cameron, Kendra Hannam & Lauren McGrath.
Mabel will be remembered for her beautiful smile and loved to watch her family and close friends benefit from her sense of humor. She was always our moral compass and has taught us everything we knew and ensured we all became someone strong and independent. She was always witty in keeping us in check. She was more than willing to participate in the family antics and in fact mostly enjoyed it when she was the center of all the fun.
Christmas always meant hand-made pajamas. She prided herself on her fudge recipe, but we enjoyed it even more when it didn’t go as planned. A lifetime of “fancy” work will be treasured forever. She made sure we had three square meals a day and were greeted by the smell of homemade bread after school every day.
She also prided herself on looking her best and the pearls and painted nails was always the priority especially for the cameras! Her joy of eating was always a topic of conversation and Mary Browns will never be the same.
She gave everyone the gift of time, guidance and wisdom. Her home was always in the right place when we needed her the most! We will treasure her involvement in our daily family lives forever.
Predeceased by: Parents: Albert & Hilda Payne, Brothers & Sisters: Beatrice Brinston, Minnie Hart, Cyril, Lewis, Arthur, Violet, Gladys, Stanley, & Elsie Payne. Husband, Hayward LeDrew and father of her children Claude Barnes. Daughter-in-law Norma Barnes (Brett).
Special thanks to the loving staff of the Saint Luke’s family. Visitation will be held at Hoskins Funeral Home, Bishop’s Falls on Tuesday November 12, 2024, at 7-9 p.m.
Funeral Service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, Main Street, Bishop’s Falls on November 13, 2024, at 1 p.m. Leave a message to the family in the guestbook on this
