Lynn Baine (nee Penson) passed away peacefully at the age of 69 on December 8, 2024, after a brave but difficult battle with Alzheimer’s.
Born in Brampton, Ontario on February 20, 1955, Lynn was the beloved sister of Doug and Karen.
Lynn attended the University of Guelph to study Psychology from 1973 to 1976, where she met her future husband John – the resident deejay – at the Bullring. One night of dancing and three weeks later, they moved in together, beginning a love story that would last a lifetime. They were married on September 12, 1981, and John stayed by her side until her final breath.
Family was at the heart of Lynn’s world. Her two daughters, Amanda and Melanie, brought her joy and purpose. As a mother, she was nurturing and always there for her girls, filling their childhood with love, laughter, and happy memories. Though Lynn’s time as a grandmother to Audrey and Owen was cut short by her illness, the moments she shared with them were filled with deep joy and connection.
Lynn’s career was dedicated to helping others. After earning her M.Ed. from McGill University, she worked as a counselor at John Abbott CEGEP in Montreal, in addition to running a private therapy practice from home. In 1997, Lynn and her family relocated to Kettleby, where she continued her work as a counselor at Georgian College. Known for her candidness, sense of humor, and deep empathy, Lynn’s colleagues and clients admired her dedication and approachability. She pursued her certification as a registered psychotherapist in 2015, just before her early onset dementia diagnosis led her to step back from her professional life.
Beyond her achievements, what really defined Lynn was her love of life. Her laugh came easy and was infectious to anyone who was with her. She adored music and was always the first on any dance floor. She made friends easily, with people gravitating towards her effortless warmth. She loved being out on the water and cherished her summers with friends and family on Georgian Bay, cruising from island to island on the family boat (Apollo). A great hostess, she was known for bringing people together and making them feel welcome. She was truly one of a kind and her light will be forever missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her.
Her family is very grateful for support from friends and family as her health declined, and in particular to her personal PSWs and the loving staff of Macassa Lodge in Hamilton for their care and compassion.
A celebration of life will be held Saturday January 11, 2025, from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, 555 Bay Street North, Hamilton, ON.
All are welcome. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ontario.
