Obituary for
Lydia Jardy
With deeply saddened hearts, we would like to announce the passing of Lydia Jardy at the Grey Nuns Hospital. Lydia was born June 5, 1931 and passed away August 28, 2024 at the age of 93.
Lydia is survived by her daughter, Carol Frantzen; son-in-law, Ole Andreas (Andre) Frantzen; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins scattered in Alberta, British Columbia, and the United States; and her good friend, Theresa, who was like a sister to her. Predeceased by her parents, Dorothy and Thomas Ostapovich; sister, Nadia Grimes; her two husbands, Steven Crushch and Henry Jardy; and numerous relatives and close friends throughout the years.
Lydia was born in Drumheller, Alberta. She lived in Drumheller and area, Edmonton, Redwater and Thorhild, Alberta with most of her years being in Edmonton and Thorhild.
Lydia was described as a feisty firecracker and kept everyone on their toes. She did not hesitate to speak her mind and tell it as it is. In her later years, she mellowed and was described as a “sweet little old lady.”
Lydia had a love for animals. Her favourites were cats, dogs, and hummingbirds. She has had numerous animals. On her farm, all the birds would come for miles around for her bird seed.
Lydia was an avid sports enthusiast. She enjoyed hockey, baseball, and curling. Of course, the Edmonton Oilers were her favourite hockey team and with baseball, it was the Toronto Blue Jays. In her younger days, Lydia participated in curling. As a teenager, Lydia skated and was compared to Canadian skating legend, Barbara Ann Scott.
She was also gifted with an excellent soprano singing voice; she knew all the old songs from the ‘30s and ‘40s. She also enjoyed good conversations, kept up-to-date on current affairs and enjoyed her card games (Bridge, etc.).
With her declining health, she was in and out of hospitals numerous times until she had no more fight. She left peacefully with her daughter Carol and Chaplain Trevor Ellerby at her side.
She will be missed by all who knew her and loved her.
Special thanks to the many doctors, nurses, support staff, and clergy staff of Station 43 and 53 of the Grey Nuns Hospital, Royal Alexandra Hospital, and Alberta Retina Consultants for all their outstanding care and support. Acknowledgement also to Millwoods Shepherd’s Care Centre, Beverly Place Lodge, Diamond Spring Lodge, and Spruce View Manor for their care and support over the years.
As per Lydia’s wishes, a private service will be held. If desired, donations may be made to the Edmonton Humane Society, 13620 – 163 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5V 0B2.
