Our hearts are broken as we announce the passing of Lucy FitzPatrick McFarlane, following a 15-year battle with Alzheimer’s. She was a treasured wife, mother, and writer who passed at Blue Crest Nursing Home in Grand Bank, on February 12 2023, at the age of 74. Lucy is survived by her husband Murray (in Grand Bank), and her two sons, Scott (in South Korea), and Tim (in Chrystal Beach, Ontario).
Lucy was born in Lord’s Cove, Newfoundland & Labrador, August 10,1948, to John and Lottie Fitzpatrick and was the youngest of a large family of nine siblings. She was predeceased by her parents, and sister Helena (Jim Maher) and brothers Fred (Marie) and Harve (Helen). Left to mourn her loss, and to cherish a lifetime of memories are her sisters Marceline (Tony Cannizaro, deceased), Kate (Cec Handrigan, deceased) and Leona (Jerry Machan) and her brothers Raphael (Winnie) and Louis, and a large circle of in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends.
She attended St. Joseph’s High School in Lamaline and went on to further her education at the College of Trades and Technology in St. John’s. After graduation, she worked in Wabush, Labrador, where she met her husband, Murray McFarlane, a civil engineer/project manager from Ontario, and they were married in Labrador City on April 22, 1972. Together, they raised two amazing sons, Scott and Tim.
Lucy was a talented wordsmith, known for her evocative writing about her beloved home province of Newfoundland. Her works, including short stories, newspaper columns, poems, books, and plays, have appeared in publications such as Newfoundland Lifestyle, Newfoundland Quarterly, Newfoundland Herald, Newfoundland TV Topics and The Downhomer (Downhome Magazine) and she was a popular writer of her Tickle & Bight column. She was particularly proud of her first stage play, a comedic piece about her brother Raphael, titled The Idler, which was produced at the Arts and Culture Centre in St. John’s for the Summer Festival and has since been performed by several high schools in the province. Her book, Tickle & Bight, published by Downhome Publishing in 2010, was sold out quickly same year. In the November, 2014 Downhome Magazine, Ron Young, retired founding editor of Downhome, wrote and published his tribute to Lucy. In it, Ron wrote “Lucy is one of the most brilliant writers I have ever met. She gets into your heart and your soul. She makes you part of her past as she shares her past with you.”
Lucy had a love for reading, enjoyed exploring new destinations, and was passionate about music and the arts. She was a kind and warm person, known for her quick wit and infectious smile. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Our family would also like to extend a sincere thank you to staff of Blue Crest Nursing Home and Ashley King for the wonderful homecare assistance she provided the year prior to Lucy entering Blue Crest.
In keeping with Lucy’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
