LOUISE FRANCES GORMAN (November 20, 1921-February 5,
2023), of Antigonish, Nova Scotia (and formerly Quebec City and
Montreal, Quebec) died peacefully at St. Martha’s Regional
Hospital, Antigonish.
Louise was predeceased by the love of her life, Dr.
Thomas William (Tom) Gorman (1917-1977, formerly of Sydney, Nova
Scotia). Also predeceased by her parents Daniel John Kane
(Quebec City) and Charlotte Marie (née Maloney) Kane
(formerly of West Roxbury, Boston, Massachusetts), as well as her
sisters Gerardine (Gerry) Kane and Ann Kane (both of Toronto,
Ontario), Margaret (née Kane) Dobie (of Sault Ste. Marie
and Owen Sound, Ontario), and brothers, Dan Kane (Windsor, Ontario)
and William (Bill) Kane (Pt. Gatineau, Quebec). Louise was also
predeceased by her in-laws, Michael Gorman and Katherine
(née Keough) Gorman (of Sydney and formerly Newfoundland),
as well as her sisters-in-law, Maisie Gorman (New York City), Amelia
(née Gorman) Doyle (Sydney) and infant granddaughter Donna
Charlotte Steele.
Louise grew up in Quebec City, attended a
girl’s boarding school in downtown Toronto operated by the
Sisters of St. Joseph, and later trained as a nurse at the Royal
Victoria Hospital in Montreal, where she met her future husband, Tom,
who was completing his surgical residency at McGill University. Louise
and Tom were married on May 1, 1951, and moved to
Antigonish.
Louise and Tom raised 5 children: Jane, Antigonish;
Mary (Joe MacNeil), Antigonish; Martha, Fredericton; Julie (Gary
Steele), Halifax; and Bill (Dawn), Pictou. Louise had 11
grandchildren: Maggie MacNeil (Tyler Davis), Hamilton; Beth MacNeil
(Tyson Cameron), Antigonish); Paul MacNeil, Calgary; Sophie Gorman
Beaudette, Montreal; Jennifer Steele, Toronto; Peter Steele, Halifax;
Tom Gorman (Sarah, née Garvey) Sydney; Kate Gorman (Sheldon
MacInnis), Antigonish; Sam Gorman, Antigonish; Kevin Forbes, Halifax;
and Marley Murray (née Forbes), Ottawa; and six
great-grandchildren: Charlie, Anna and Teddy Cameron, (Antigonish) and
Max, Amelia and Bridget Gorman (Sydney).
She was an active volunteer with many community
groups, including the St. Martha’s Hospital Auxiliary.
She also served on the St. Martha’s Hospital Board
of Directors, the John Hugh Gillis Regional High School Library, St.
Ninians’s Parish Council, and the Antigonish Food
Bank. She was also an avid fundraiser for the Canadian
Cancer Society.
Louise was a woman of deep faith and strong
character, and she was a wonderful wife, mother, friend, neighbour,
and community advocate. She will be deeply missed by anyone who was
fortunate to know her.
Cremation has taken place. Funeral Mass
will be held at 11am on Friday, February 10, 2023 in St. Ninian
Cathedral, Antigonish, with Reverend Daniel MacLennan presiding.
The family asks that masks be worn at the
funeral.
Burial in the parish cemetery at a later
date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St
Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation, the Antigonish Food
Bank, or the charity of your choice.
