It’s with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Lorris Lydia Kuz on Sunday, September 3rd, 2023, at the age of 84 years. Surrounded by her loving family she peacefully passed away at the Regina Wascana Grace Hospice in Regina, Saskatchewan.
Lorris was predeceased by her husband Steve; parents Harry and Katherine Smycniuk; brother Zane Smycniuk; parents-in-law William and Anne Kuz; and sisters-in-law Lilian Borowitz and Levina Kuz.
She is survived by her five children and eleven grandchildren, Deborah (Perry) Schmidt, Braden, Riley, and Jordan Schmidt; Terry (Laura) Kuz, Tessa, Nolan; Kelly (George) Sheard Nakia, Joshua and Kieran Forsberg; Dean Kuz (Darla Keen) Kelsey, Eric and Carlie; and Glenn Kuz. Lorris is also survived by three sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Lorris was born on March 13, 1939, in the Churchill District north of Ituna, Saskatchewan. At age 16, she graduated early from Sacred Heart High School in Yorkton, SK.
Lorris and Steve married in 1960 and started their family, living in north Regina. As the family expanded to five children, they moved to Uplands to a house they built together where she lived for the remainder of her life.
Lorris worked intermittently throughout the years. She was an executive secretary for Saskatchewan Power Corporation, worked for Canada Post, the Kidney Foundation, and selling Avon. She spent the bulk of her years being a stay at home while her husband Steve worked for SaskTel. She was an avid and generous volunteer for many different organizations including the Diabetes Association, Royal Canadian Legion, St. Athanasius Parish, and the many schools her grandchildren attended.
Lorris had a strong Ukrainian Catholic Faith. St. Athanasius Parish was her religious home and second family. She was a devoted parishioner and volunteer. She was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women’s League for almost 18 years and enjoyed singing God’s praises as a steady member of the Choir.
Since she was a child, she loved music, singing and dancing, learning her first instrument the accordion by age six, and subsequently piano, guitar, and violin.
She loved her family dearly and devoted her life to raising five beautiful children resulting in 11 grandchildren in whose lives she was incredibly active and always in attendance at their events. She was a gentle, precious soul with a great sense of humour. She gave freely of her time and energy to help everyone, without exception or question. She will be deeply missed and forever loved by all who knew her.
The family would like to thank all the staff of Unit 4A at the Pasqua Hospital for the excellent care she received and the incredible staff of the Regina Wascana Grace Hospice for their gentle and compassionate care.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Regina Wascana Grace Hospice.
Prayers will be held at Speers Funeral Chapel, 2136 College Avenue, Regina, SK on Sunday, Sept 10, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. Athanasius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 55 McMurchy Avenue, Regina, SK on Monday Sept 11, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
