Lorraine Anne (Pinay) Powell, late of Regina, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2023, at the age of 79 years. She was predeceased by her parents, Noel and Emma Pinay; brothers, Ron, Shane, Dwight and Bruce Pinay; sister, Ida Michaud; brother-in-law, Robert Michaud; and nephew Jeremy Pinay. Lorraine is survived by her daughter, Cheryl (Graham) Farrell; her son, Christopher Powell; her grandchildren, Joshua (Krista) Farrell, Jacob Farrell, Megan (Kyle) Jones and Mikayla Farrell; her great grandchildren, Aubrey and Henry Farrell; her sisters, Donna Pinay, Debbie Pinay, Sandy (Kurt) Schindler, Alix (Guy) Delvaux; her brothers, Lloyd, Les (Linda) and Paul Pinay; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lorraine was born December 30, 1944. She attended Lebret Indian Residential School from grades one through eight. Lorraine considered herself fortunate to have her parents close by as they both worked at the school. She later completed Grade 12 in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan.
Lorraine married Larry Powell on April 17, 1968. She and Larry moved to numerous places while raising their children, Cheryl and Christopher. Family life for Lorraine included many camping trips, visits with her parents, cooking many meals, and sewing beautiful clothes. She instilled the values of a caring and supportive family through her generosity and grace. Lorraine also had a great sense of humour and sharp wit, leading to lots of laughter through her comedic commentary.
While the kids attended school, Lorraine held many different occupations, but she worked mainly as a home care worker. She loved helping her “clients” and developed close bonds with many of them throughout her career. Lorraine was very meticulous when cleaning their homes or preparing their meals.
The passion and pride she had in caring for others was best exemplified through her care for her family and friends. Lorraine was a wonderful and proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved to see and spend time with her grandchildren. Lorraine’s grandkids would wait in the driveway when they knew she was coming, as she was famous for bringing toys, games, clothing and treats to spoil them with. Her care packages in the mail at Halloween were eagerly anticipated and it was common knowledge that her cards were the best as they often included a generous chunk of change inside. Lorraine loved watching their dance recitals, music recitals and sporting events. She passed on her competitive spirit to her family through her many victories playing cards and board games, her favourite of which was always Scrabble. Lorraine was known to bring her own rotating Scrabble board, dictionary, and even a two-letter word guide to help out during dire moments. She loved to keep score during these games and often challenged dubious plays, that is unless you were on her good side, which her grandchildren and friends always were.
Lorraine’s hobbies included curling, reading, shopping and sewing. She was a voracious reader and often had a paperback in her hand. Lorraine also loved searching for bargains at garage sales, Value Village and dollar stores. She was a collector, priding herself on her angels which she kept in her china cabinet. Lorraine was an active member of the Royal Purple in Coronach and loved attending the annual curling tournament. She loved traveling with her friends for a day of shopping or meeting her friends for coffee row.
In her later years, Lorraine suffered from body inclusive myopathy; a chronic illness that affected the muscular control of her hands, legs and throat. She was very determined to live independently for as long as she could. Although this diagnosis was challenging and physically debilitating, it did not affect her cognitive functioning or break her strong spirit. Lorraine’s pride, sharp wit, loving nature, and affable sense of humour persisted until her final moments.
A family service will be held at a later date.
