Lorne Carl Norris, June 20, 1948 – July 24, 2024
Lorne Carl Norris, 76, beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend passed away peacefully in Toronto surrounded by loved ones in the early morning of Wednesday, July 24th, 2024. Predeceased by his cherished son Andrew, and parents Adelaide and Jacob Norris, Lorne is survived by his wife of over 50 years Ann, his son Mark (Sandhaya), daughter Alison (Jeff), and daughter-in-law Andrea. Lorne also leaves behind nine beautiful grandchildren that loved him dearly. In addition, Lorne will be remembered by a large community of close family and friends for whom he cared deeply.
Raised in Trinity, Bonavista Bay, NL, Lorne, who also went by Carl, loved to tell stories of his upbringing and the many wonderful memories he had growing up and his transition to city life in St. John’s. At the age of 17 after returning from a year working in Labrador with IOC, Lorne went to work with Nightingale Bros., and eventually transitioned to and finished his career with the Federal Government as a training facilitator.
Lorne loved recounting the early years of his courtship with his lifetime partner Ann, with whom he shared an inseparable bond. After their marriage in 1972, they settled into a beautiful bungalow in Mount Pearl, and welcomed three children. Lorne loved Ann more than life itself. They continued to make many new memories into their retirement years through their love of travelling and spending time with family and friends. Lorne not only was a supportive and present father but a dedicated and proud grandfather. He was a constant presence at all of his grandchildren’s activities.
In addition to his commitment to family, Lorne was a 50-year member of the Neptune Lodge No. 22 member, Ancient Free & Accepted Masons. During his Masonic career, he served as Master on four separate occasions. In 1996, he was appointed District Grand Standard Bearer of the former District Grand Lodge of Newfoundland & Labrador, and in 2014 he was appointed to the Board of General Purposes of the Grand Lodge of Newfoundland & Labrador. He was passionate about the Masons and their mission to give back to the community and made many lifelong friends along the way.
Lorne was a humorous, kind, intelligent man who was highly regarded among all that knew him. His participation in and commitment to leading community endeavors including Scouts Canada and the Mount Pearl Minor Hockey Association were notable over the course of his lifetime, and he served as a role model for many. When relaxing, Lorne loved to listen to music, spend time outside the city, fish, and cheer on his beloved Toronto Maple Leafs.
Lorne’s family would like to thank the many individuals that helped support his health, his home environment, and overall wellbeing over the last year. A special thank you to Drs. Skirving, Armstrong, Vickers, Mathieson, McGilvray, Schwaartz, Hostland, and the nurses and staff at the Health Sciences Center, Queensway Carleton Hospital, and Toronto General Hospital. We would also like to thank Derek and Kevin for their help looking after and tending to issues with the family home over the last 18 months.
In lieu of sympathy cards or flowers, individuals wishing to donate to a registered charity in Lorne’s name may consider a donation to the Health Care Foundation of St. John’s, or the Newfoundland and Labrador Down Syndrome Society. Although not registered or able to provide a tax receipt, individuals may also choose to donate to the Neptune Lodge Charity Fund, Box 6, Freemasons Hall, 115 Mount Carson Avenue, Mount, Pearl, NL, A1N 3K6.
A public service in honor of Lorne’s memory will be held at St. Thomas Church, 8 Military Road, St. John’s, NL on Thursday August 15th at 2PM. A celebration of Lorne’s life will be held after the service at the Free Masons Hall, Masonic Park, 115 Mount Caron Ave., Mount Pearl, NL from 3-5:30PM.
