Lorna Berkowitz
(née Lonia Zygielman)
Holocaust Survivor
On Saturday, April 13, 2024, on her one hundred and second birthday. Beloved wife of the late Chaskel for forty-seven years. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Fayla (Vinebaum) and Michael Heitner, Miriam and Steve Sivec. Cherished grandmother of L Vinebaum and Kenny Smilovitch, Lori Vinebaum and Avi Goldberg, Chad Miller (Nick). Proud great-grandmother of Ruby Goldberg. Predeceased by her parents and siblings who perished in the Holocaust.
Lorna was a strong and resilient woman. She and Chaskel escaped the war and eventually began a new life in Montreal. Widowed at a young age, Lorna went back to school, forged new friendships, travelled, and enjoyed navigating Montreal’s shopping and sights. She was deeply devoted to her children and grandchildren, and her greatest pleasure was cooking and baking for them. She will be deeply missed.
The family extends its great appreciation to the entire 5th floor staff of the Kastner Pavilion at the Jewish Eldercare Centre. Special thanks to Arnold, and especially to Julia, whom Lorna adored.
