It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother at the Western Palliative Care Unit in Corner Brook surrounded by her loving family, Loretta Effie (Gillard) Kelly in her 87th year.
She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Leo in 2015, her parents Reginald and Eliza (Reader) Gillard, her parents in law, Richard and Florence (Stuckless) Kelly, her sisters Sylvia Myler and Kay Kelly, brothers in law William (Bill) Byrne, Charlie Flemming, Kevin Myler, Bernard (Bern) Kelly, Gordon King and Ralph Kelly.
Leaving to mourn with many fond and loving memories are her son Jerry Kelly (Daisy) of CBS, her daughters Judy Ann (Derek) Murphy of Howley, Norma (Ken) Power of Howley and Nora (Kevin) Barrett of Grande Prairie AB, and her “special daughter” Margaret Hampton who was her devoted homecare worker for over 12 years.
Mom had nine grandchildren: Brian Kelly, Howley; Brad Kelly (Alicia), Fort McMurray AB; Tim (Sheri) Hayward, Mt. Pearl; Jeremy (Nancy) Kelly, CBS; Kelsey Power, Corner Brook; Kelly Power, Howley; Braylan Barrett (Teri-Lynn), Grande Prairie, AB; MacKinnon Barrett, Grande Prairie and Courtney Murphy (Ben), Eastern Passage, NS.
Seven great grandchildren: Chloe & Megan Hayward, Mt. Pearl; Brook & Jade Kelly, CBS; Kai Kelly, Port au Choix; Ashton Kelly, Howley and Cole Naylor, Eastern Passage NS.
Also leaving to mourn are her sisters Geraldine Flemming, ON, Sharon King, Brigus and Diane (Jerry) McLean, Howley and Sister in Law Theresa Byrne, Howley and a large circle of nieces, nephews other family and friends.
Very special friends Linda Curtis, Calvin & Patsy Samms as well as her other homecare worker Brenda Kelly.
She also leaves her faithful companion Lucky, her cat.
The family will be receiving family and friends at the Howley United Church Friday evening, April 7, 7-9 and Saturday, April 8, 2-4 and 7-9 from where also her funeral service will take place on Sunday April 9 at 3 pm with Rev. Jocelyn Cook officiating. Burial will take place in the Howley United Cemetery after the service.
A very special thank you goes out to Dr. Farzaneh, Nurses and staff at Unit 4 A/B of WMRH and the doctors and nurses at the Western Palliative Care Unit whose compassion and caring was beyond measure. Thank you seems so inadequate.
Mom was a devoted supporter of the Newfoundland Pony Society having bred and raised several. Finally having to face reality at the age of 82, that she was no longer capable of looking after her beloved Newfoundland Pony, Sou’West Maggie, she rehomed her to Robbins Family Farm in Goose Arm where she received so much love and care until her death in 2022. Mom was also a 28-year member of the Howley Town Council and along with our dad, operated their own business, Leo’s General Store, for 23 years before retiring.
Through mom’s illness, we lost her but gained a “special sister” in Margaret.
Flowers gratefully accepted or donations in her memory to The Howley United Church will be greatly appreciated.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Parson’s Funeral Home, 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake.
