It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Loretta Barter, age 76 passed away April 6, 2023, at Hospice Cape Breton after a short but courageous battle with cancer.
Loretta was born October 28, 1946, in Francois, Newfoundland. She was the daughter of the late Nathan and Marie (Baggs) Fudge.
Loretta is survived by her loving husband, Billy, who would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in May. She is also survived by her daughter, Lorrie (Blair), Howie Centre; son, Jonathan (Sabrina), Catalone; grandchildren, Morgan, Coby, and Noah. She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Winnie Barter; sister-in-law, Rosie (Raymond) Lahey; brothers-in-law, Andrew (Gladys), Raymond (Diane), Calvin (Linda «Dinks»), as well as nieces, nephews, and many special friends.
Her family was her pride and joy and she enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her children and grandchildren who she loved dearly. She was an active member of the St. Bartholomew’s Anglican Church where she was part of the choir, a member of the ACW, as well as a Sunday school teacher for many years. Loretta enjoyed being involved in the bookclub, doing crafts, cooking (she was the best cook), going for her daily walks with her good friend Shirley and going for Sunday drives after church with her soul mate Billy.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Eric and Nathan; father-in- law, George; brother-in-law, Wallace.
Visitation will take place Wednesday April 12, 2023, in First United Church, Louisbourg, from 12 – 2 pm. Funeral service will be held in the church at 2 pm with Rev. Peter Rafuse officiating. Interment in St. Bartholomew’s Cemetery. The funeral service will be livestreamed on the Sydney Memorial Chapel Facebook page.
The family would like to thank the amazing staff at Hospice Cape Breton as well as all the health care professionals that have helped Loretta over the last couple months. Your compassion will never be forgotten.
Memorials may be made to St. Bartholomew’s Church, Louisbourg or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton County.
