Obituary of Lois Hueston
Hueston, Lois Jane (Wilson)
Passed away peacefully surrounded by her family at her home in Port Hope on Sunday November 10, 2024, Lois Wilson was in her 89th year.Born in Niagara Falls on June 19, 1936, Lois was the younger daughter of the late Jack Wilson (1959) and Evelyn Peacock (1988). Dear sister of the late Molly Herman (late John) who predeceased her in 2020. Loving niece to her aunt, the late Barbara Kernaghan (late Vern) who also predeceased her in 2023. Born 22 years after her sister Evelyn, Barb was more like a sister to Molly and Lois whom they affectionately called “Auntie” (or «Barb», but rarely together) despite being not quite four and eight years older than her nieces, respectively.
Adored mother of Sandra, Jim (Michelle) and Scott (Jennifer Tanaka). Proudest Gran to Olivia, Naomi, Alec and Anderson (AJ). Cherished Aunt of Jennifer Cunningham (Mike Gulka), Jennifer’s daughter Kelsey (Talula) and Andrew Herman. Remembered by cousins Lynda Zittier, Shaun Kernaghan (Karen Mikula), Kelly Kernaghan, Jay Wilson (Alison Walton) and family, late Robert McDonald (2016), the late Richard “Dick” Ghiselin (late Ann) and Dick’s extended family in Texas. Also survived by Molly’s husband Wray Tighe.
Lois had a long and full life filled with friends and laughter whether it was Saturday breakfasts with “the girls” – Liz, Shirley, Ruth, Mary, Judy and Elaine, Wednesday bridge or First Friday bridge, she was well known for her sense of fun and good humour. During her time with Probus, she was the resident joke-teller.
Growing up, Lois always knew she wanted to be a nurse and convinced some of her undecided friends to come along. They chose to attend the nurses training program at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto as it was downtown in the midst of good food and shopping. Apparently being Protestants was not held against them as they all got in. Friends in for the adventure and new friends made include Nancy, Sue, Doreen, Sylvia and Audrey. Friends who lived together, learned together, played together and laughed together with reportedly only one cottage harmed in the process. (Maybe two)
But there could be no talk of friendship without Cathy, Lois’ “Very, Very Best Friend in the Whole Wide World” who gained this status sometime around the age of three and has stood the test of time through thick and thin in the 85 years since. It was Cathy, who asked Lois if she would like to come to Port Hope where she was teaching at the time and spend Thanksgiving with her, Cathy’s then fiancé and eventual husband, Claude and his friend and roommate, a guy named Frank. And the rest, as they say, is history.
Friends will be received at the Allison Funeral Home, 103 Mill Street North, Port Hope, Monday November 18, 2024 6-8 pm and Tuesday November 19, 2024 from 10 am until time of Funeral Service at 11 am at St. John’s Anglican Church, 33 Pine Street North, Port Hope. Entombment, Port Hope Union Cemetery, Columbarium Tuesday 2:30 pm. If desired, memorial contributions may be made by cheque to St. John’s Anglican Church, Port Hope.
