Obituary
Wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandma, Lois left us unexpectedly due to heart complications earlier this week. A special thanks to Lois’s medical care team who worked tirelessly to keep her comfortable. She passed away peacefully at Foothills Hospital in Calgary surrounded by family.
Lois was graceful, witty, and stubbornly independent. She was proudly put together, from clothing accessories to an immaculate Christmas dinner table. She led with strength, charm, and friendliness. But scratch that surface and there was nothing like a game of cards to reveal a beating heart we so loved: her feisty competitiveness and zest for life to be found in a sly winning grin, sharp tongue, easy laugh, and a sarcastic comment about your lack of card prowess that somehow felt like a hug. Whether it was Lois’s childhood friends who were her atoms of the universe for life, work friends, coffee talk friends, line-dance group, exercise group, or adjacent seat occupiers at Hurricane games, she always offered a big smile, a happy “hello” and a keen interest in how you and your family were doing. “Social butterfly” fit Lois like a glove.
When we looked around Lois’s room, we found her life’s keepsakes—emblematic of the way she loved us: newspaper stories about life-long friends and families, proud photos of her three children, grandchildren, and of her beloved Ed —who she fell in love with as a teenager, and with whom she journeyed life together happily for 52 years. Lois took care of Ed lovingly and relentlessly during his seven-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy. They were what real love looks like.
Lois loved learning. She loved reading. That passion translated into the many years she worked at Park Meadows School library in Lethbridge, and the libraries and administration offices at the Alberta Vocational College in both Calgary and Edmonton. Lois had a vivacious curiosity for life and was a keen conversationalist about world matters.
Lois was born in Tuberose, Saskatchewan, and moved to Lethbridge at a very young age. The vast majority of her years were spent in Lethbridge. Lois was predeceased by her brother, Ken Styner, and her parents, Ethel and Dick Styner. She will be missed by her daughters Debbie (Chris) Fields, Brenda (Jonathan) Tennant, and Karen Gorzitza; her sisters Shirley Lapierre and Dixie (Darcy) Dickout; and her grandchildren Nicole, Ryan, and Tyler.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 pm, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at MARTIN BROTHERS RIVERVIEW CHAPEL, 610, 4 STREET SOUTH, Lethbridge, Alberta, with Reverend Trevor Potter, officiating.
