Obituary of Lloyd Ervin Deering
Lloyd was born to Conrad and Mary Deering in Leader, Saskatchewan on October 16, 1936. The ninth of nine children, Lloyd grew up on the farm which his father had homesteaded. Later he attended the University of Saskatchewan, graduating with a degree in Commerce in 1957. Lloyd met Carol at church in Saskatoon before moving to Calgary to work for The British American Oil Company, which later became Canadian Gulf Oil. In 1958, they were married in Calgary, where their three oldest children (Nola, Lowell and Dale) were born. The family moved through a series of global locations including Abadan Iran, Houston Texas, Atlanta Georgia (where their youngest child Wayne was born), and Toronto.
Lloyd was always active in the church serving as an usher, elder, and often as treasurer responsible for church finances. In addition to his love of numbers, Lloyd was also very practical, building cabinets and decks and doing many household repairs, as well as gardening. He was also actively involved in a number of charities, such as his work with World Relief, and the Canadian Centre for Christian Charities, and after retiring, with Awana clubs, MAF Papua New Guinea, and Shepherd Village Gardens – sharing his accounting and leadership skills in quiet but meaningful ways, and generous with his giving. Lloyd enjoyed helping people become financially capable, and was a wise investor in people.
Family meant a great deal to Lloyd, and with a young family that often meant a late summer visit to the farms of his siblings in Saskatchewan, visiting family in Alberta or family vacations exploring various parts of the US and Canada from a tent trailer. Upon retirement Lloyd & Carol moved to Vineland where they were involved in their church and enjoyed many visits from their 11 grandchildren. Lloyd and Carol loved to travel around the world and kept up with many friends from previous locations until Carol’s death in 2017. Lloyd intentionally spent quality time with each of his grandchildren, later getting to know their spouses and recently welcoming the first great-grandchild. People often spoke of Lloyd as a man of integrity, who was trustworthy, self-disciplined, resourceful, organized, loyal, and appreciative of quality.
Visitation will take place on Thursday May 23rd, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM at First Alliance Church (3250 Finch Ave E, Toronto) followed by a funeral service at 3 PM. A private family interment will take place at the Vineland cemetery. Donations in Lloyd’s memory can be made to MAF Canada using the following link: maf.ca/donate/memorial
