Lloyd Leslie Millett
1934-2024
Lloyd Leslie Millett,
90, of New Ross, passed away peacefully in his home on Sunday,
September 8, 2024.
Born and raised in
Gaspereau, he was a son of the late Leslie Otis and Ethel Mae
(Skaling) Millett. At a young age, Lloyd left home to live with his
aging grandparents and help them on their farm. This began a lifelong
love of farmwork for Lloyd.
In his teen years,
Lloyd transitioned from farming to working in logging camps. At the
age of 19, he heard of a property in New Ross that was in need of some
help with logging and other tasks. He ended up purchasing this
property and established it as his homestead. Not being a man to deny
anyone assistance, he had the original property owners live on the
farm with him as long as they could.
Not long after, Lloyd
met and became smitten with the girl from the farm next door. This
girl was Shirley, they quickly became inseparable and have since
enjoyed 66 wonderful years of marriage. He was a devoted husband and
cared for Shirley dearly.
Together, Lloyd and
Shirley developed and worked on their thriving farm. Side by side,
they planted crops and harvested Christmas trees, grew hay, and raised
cattle. In the early days, they enjoyed apple picking together in the
Annapolis Valley.
Besides farming,
Lloyd’s great love was his family. He and Shirley raised
four children. Lloyd was an incredibly supportive father; he helped
his children achieve their dreams and backed them up in whatever they
wanted to do with their lives.
Lloyd was a fun father
and uncle. There were lots of family who lived close by, and on the
weekends, when all the family would gather together, he could always
be found outside playing hockey or baseball with the kids. Everyone
enjoyed spending time with him. He loved taking his children on
adventures and would always include them in whatever he was
doing.
Lloyd was a sociable
man who loved telling stories and engaging with others. For years, he
and Shirley enjoyed attending card parties together. His love for
nature was evident in his frequent walks through the woods, always
with a chainsaw in hand, and often with his children in tow. Each
hunting season, Lloyd would bring home a buck to feed his family. His
children would accompany him on the hunting trips so he could show
them the ropes, and he was a strong believer in learning by observing.
Of all the things Lloyd liked to do, his favourite by far, was mowing
hay. If hay grew year-round, he would have been delighted to mow every
day.
He had also been
involved with 4H for several years, as a leader and parent and
received an award for his time and dedication to the organization.
Lloyd also had a love for tug-of-war and participated as a young man
and coached a team for years when he was older.
Lloyd valued hard work
and education, an aspect of his life that was little known but
incredibly important. Despite his busy farm life, he made a point to
educate himself by taking various courses, including a two-year
program to become a certified welder and a course in carpentry. Later
in life, Lloyd served as one of three directors of an old one-room
schoolhouse in Fraxville.
Lloyd lived a
fulfilling life, that was full of love. He will be greatly missed by
all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Lloyd is survived by
his beloved wife, Shirley; children, Peter (Trish), Allen (Fern),
Nelson (Isabel) and Cindy; grandchildren, Amanda, Dawn, Devan, Robyn,
Danielle, Chantelle, Anna, Leo, Dominik and Mattea;
great-grandchildren, Owen, Alexis, Sienna, and Declan; brothers;
Bernie (Grace), Louie (Sharon), Donnie (Doris), Vance (Barb), Paul
(Florence) sister; Brenda, as well as many nieces and
nephews.
In addition to his
parents, Lloyd was predeceased by siblings, Victor, Richard
«Dickie» and Jean.
Visitation for Lloyd
will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11
a.m. on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, in the St. John’s
Anglican Church, Port Williams, with Reverend Maya Bevan to officiate.
Following the service, you are invited to join the family at a
reception in the church hall.
Donations in
Lloyd’s memory may be made to the New Ross 4H Club
