It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lloyd Hutchinson Ebenezer Bruce, who was born on May 17, 1939, in what was at the time the serene location of Patience Hill, Tobago. Lloyd grew up in a large family, a loving son to Henrietta Bruce (née Lavington) and Samuel E. Bruce, with ten siblings, forming strong bonds with each one. Aliston (deceased), Wilburt (deceased) Jim (deceased), Harold King (deceased), St. Albert (deceased), Cleo (deceased), Margaret (deceased), Beryl (deceased), Lennox and Eugene all held a special place in his heart. Lloyd married his sweetheart Vida Ann-June Bruce (née Douglas), and together they welcomed a beloved child into their lives, Lois Catherine Bruce. Driven by his ambition and thirst for knowledge, he moved his young family to the United States with plans to study at Howard University, marking the beginning of an incredible journey.
When Lloyd moved to the United States, Washington, D.C. became their home, but it was the 60s, and Lloyd experienced the racial turmoil that marked the era. During this time, on July 13, 1968, to be precise, Lloyd symbolized his dedication to Jehovah and was baptized. Despite the challenges and obstacles he faced during this civil rights struggle, Lloyd remained resilient and focused on his academic pursuits. His experiences during this tumultuous period shaped his perspective and reinforced his commitment to strive for a life that included equality and justice.
In the mid to late 60s, seeking a more stable environment for his young family, Lloyd made the decision to relocate to Canada. The move was successful, and the young family established themselves in Hamilton, Ontario, where they joyfully welcomed their two daughters, Suzanne and Nadine, who brought happiness and completeness to their growing family. The move, however, was not without its challenges, as he initially struggled to find a meaningful career and a sense of community. After two more subsequent moves through Stratford, Ontario, and finally to Toronto (Scarborough), Ontario, with perseverance and dedication, Lloyd eventually found his footing. He established a successful career and built a supportive network, laying the foundation for a promising future for his family.
Lloyd’s dedication to his family was unwavering. He worked tirelessly to ensure not only the well-being of his family but also to make his home in Canada a haven for new opportunities or just a respite from the daily expectations of life, embodying the spirit of generosity and kinship that Lloyd was known for.
Lloyd Bruce’s legacy is one of resilience, love, and dedication. He touched many lives with his kindness and wisdom, and his story serves as an inspiration to all who knew him. He is survived by his devoted wife Vida Ann-June Bruce, his cherished children Lois, Suzanne, and Nadine, his beloved grandchildren Payton and Tyson Presser, his caring and generous sons-in-law Philip Presser (deceased) and Franco Storti, and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who will carry his memory forward. His journey from Patience Hill to Canada is a testament to his enduring spirit and the profound impact he had on those around him.
