Lionel Bruce-Payne Obituary
Lionel Bruce-Payne (aka Lee Payne), 87, of North Bay, Ontario, passed away peacefully Friday, November 24 in the presence of his family.
Born to parents Richard and Eleanor Bruce-Payne in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1936, Lee was the middle of three sons between Hugh (deceased) and Barry. He is survived by his wife of 55 years Maureen (Walton), three children and four grandchildren Geoffrey (Cynthia, Justin, Hugo), Andrew (Leia, Anya, Ian) and Alanna (John White), and brother Barry (Neva). Much loved brother-in-law to Edith and Giles (deceased) Benoit, Neil and Sandra Walton and extraordinary uncle to Steven, Kathy, David and Chris. Extended family cannot go unmentioned, his best buddies Roy (deceased) and Anne Summers and unforgettable “uncle” to their children Cathy, Erica and Paul. Lee is fondly loved and remembered by family and friends as the consummate outdoorsman, with a passion for life and always eager to help when something needed to be built or fixed.
As a young man Lee joined the Royal Canadian Navy and travelled the world. He then became a carpenter in Toronto before moving to North Bay where he met his lifelong partner and best friend Maureen. There, he and his band of merry men enjoyed many outdoor adventures in his beloved “North Country” wilderness. Lee was an avid conservationist, fisherman and hunter, volunteering for years with the North Bay Hunters and Anglers Club, and the Scouts. He was also a keen downhill skier familiar at the local hills in North Bay and Mattawa, to the age of 82. Later in life he became a volunteer and Life Member of the North Bay Golden Age Club, as well as the local handyman at Sunnyside Trailer Park in Bonfield.
Lee was also an entrepreneur, establishing and running two successful businesses in North Bay (L&M Contracting, Northern Specialty Coatings & Finishes) with partner Maureen. They employed many people, including professionals who later cited fond memories of their first job working for Lee, where they were encouraged to continue with their education. His strong work ethic and skills were also put to good use and passed on, with fond memories and thanks, renovating or repairing the homes of his children.
In his later years he courageously survived several ailments yet retained a positive outlook on life and twinkle in his eye, until the end. Special thanks to Doctors Gushue and Leckie and the palliative care team at Mattawa General Hospital for their compassion and care. We wish Lee well at the giant fishing hole or bow hunting tree stand in the sky joining his friends who passed before him, where the big one never gets away.
A celebration of Lee’s life will be held at the North Bay Golden Age Club, 135 Worthington Street West from 2-4pm on Saturday, December 2nd 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Alzheimer Society of Canada, Mattawa Hospital Hospice, Canadian Cancer Society or the Nipissing Serenity Hospice.
