Obituary
Linda Jean aka Dutchie (Bestrop) Jahnke of Herbert, Sask and formally of the Log Valley district, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2023 in the Herbert and District Integrated Health Facility ending her lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis at age 74. She leaves behind her two sons: Mike, his wife, Chelsea and their children Lane & Cady; Matt, his partner, Lindsey Armstrong and their children, Sawyer & Talia and Matt’s daughters, Hayli & Jordi. She will also be missed by her brother Bill (Shorty); her sister, Betty Clark and husband Art Mallender and her son Randy; and sister-in-law Jackie Bestrop, and children, Jeff (Carly) Bestrop, their children Kelly (Matt), Taylor and Colby; and Kristen Bestrop. Linda is also survived by many Bestrop, Schafer, and Jahnke relatives. She was predeceased by husband, Donald Jahnke (2014), infant daughter, Jesse (1985), grandson, Brendan (2004), her brother, George (2010) and parents, Bernie (1994) and Mary (1986).
Linda Jean was born on July 9, 1948 at Herbert, to Bernie & Mary Bestrop (Schafer), the second of four children. Shortly thereafter Bernie nicknamed her Dutchie, a name that remained with her throughout her entire life. To this day, many don’t know who “Linda” was. She liked growing up on the farm north of Morse, always a tomboy, enjoying 4H with her Dad more than helping her Mom with household chores. In her prime, Dutch was a social creature and could often be found socializing at a gathering sporting her “red cowboy boots”.
She attended Rolling Plains and Morse School. After high school graduation in 1966, she moved to Regina to attend Marvel Beauty College studying Cosmetology. Upon graduation, she applied her hair styling skills at Charm Beauty Salon and First Lady Beauty Salon in Swift Current. On the ranch, at the kitchen table, she continued to cut hair until no longer physically able.
On February 5, 1982, Dutchie married Don Jahnke. She enjoyed ranch life, being a homemaker and raising her boys. They were her pride and joy and she did everything she possibly could to see them happy. She tended to the garden, preserving what Don had planted and nurtured throughout the season. Dutch liked to give surplus garden produce to friends & family, starting with asparagus when it was ready in the spring.
In fall of 1991, she was diagnosed with MS. As her condition worsened, family life changed. As her mobility decreased, she enjoyed watching the birds that visited her bird feeders, see the cattle and horses passing by her window, and never missed an Atlanta Braves baseball game. She enjoyed friends and neighbors coming over for coffee and a visit. Over the years many caregivers assisted Don with her care. Many of which became forever friends helping her face the many physical challenges in her life. In particular, Char Montgomery, who held her hand when she needed it the most. After Don’s death, it became no longer feasible for her to remain on the ranch and in October 2014, she made the decision to move into the Herbert and District Integrated Health Facility. With her sense of humor, quick wit, and sassy comebacks, she quickly became a cherished resident to management and staff. The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff for her care.
In keeping with Linda’s wishes, there will be no service. The interment will take place at a later date. For those wishing, memorial donations may be made to Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada – Saskatchewan Division, 150 Albert Street, Regina, SK S4R 2N2 would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements were in care of Swift Current Funeral Home, Swift Current, Sask.
