INTREVADO, Lina –
On Sunday, April 2nd 2023, Carolina (Lina) Intrevado. Loving wife and mother of one, passed away at the age of 87 years. Lina was born on March 7th 1936 in Ururi, Italy. She immigrated to Canada in 1958, and married her husband, Giuseppe in 1962. became the proud mother of her daughter Marie Theresa.
She made a living as a sewing machine operator, and eventually retired due to health issues. She was the type of person who loved to talk and offer advice. She was always there to lend a friendly ear and offer assistance whenever she could. She had a sense of humour that would make most people laugh, and the ones that didn’t laugh, she would regard them as being stupid. She was always very kind and compassionate.
As much as she enjoyed the garden, she was allergic to most of the plants, but did it anyways. She enjoyed making everything homemade. She loved to sew, and took pride in her creations. One of my most treasured memories is my mom and I making cookies and sausages together.
Lina is survived by her only child, Marie Theresa. Good-bye Mamma Lina. Sleep in peace until we meet again. You will always be loved and cherished.
Mommy dearest. She was such a special lady. She had a hard life. She suffered a lot. At the age of 7, she lost the vision in her right eye, when some one threw a piece of wood at her. She didn’t realize it at the time. Then years later when there was a lunar eclipse, and tried to look, she realized she could not see out of her right eye and asked her mother why she couldn’t see. Her mother replied someone had thrown a piece of wood at her. But no one took her to the doctor. She learned to sew by herself because the lady who was teaching her how to sew had a dog that she was allergic to. There a talent was born and nurtured. Mommy had such an amazing talent for sewing, and embroidery. If something was off by a millimeter, she could see it. She had such a special talent for creating beauty.
She came to Canada at the tender age of 22, and within 3 days she found work at a factory as a sewing machine operator and worked piece work. She started sewing men’s pyjamas and underwear, and later moved onto bedspreads, hospital wear, doctor’s booties and surgical hats. While I was young, she made all of my clothes. She even made drapes for the house. All of this with one eye!
Mom had a talent for spreading good cheer. She was always friendly to everyone she met. When she met someone at the bus stop, she didn’t care if he was the scariest, biggest looking guy at the stop, and if she saw him smoking she would say in her high pitched voice, “You pay to get sick.” Then the person would reply, “you’re right” and started to laugh. One of my favourite things she would say, “You know why we came to Canada? We thought we would get money from the tree.” Again, the laughter started. She was just so easy to get along with, always so caring, supportive and compassionate towards others.
She was famous for reciting her poems and her proverbs to anyone who would listen. One of my favourites was “keep the house clean and the pocket dirty with money.” Some of the poems were: “A Mother Is Like a Big Tree;” (La Mama E Come Un Albero Grande) “The Rich Versus the Poor;” (I Ricchi E I Poveri) “The Months of the Year” (Le Mesi De’Lanno) just to name a few. She would recite those poems to the end.
She loved to bake cookies, especially chocolate almond and the orange juice and vanilla. She enjoyed making her own sausages, prosciutto, easter buns, jams, and so on. Typical Italian lady, right? Everything had to be home-made.
She was a rocker at heart. She always had music in the house, from morning until night, and singing to the songs she heard on the radio. She even taped quite a few. She loved going to the Chin picnics in the summer, and we would always be the last ones to leave because everywhere she went, she made a friend. She would always be dancing around the house, until one day, she was no longer able to stand up by herself.
She was the kind of mother that always stood up for me. I remember when I was going to a Catholic high school and had to wear a uniform. Well, one day, I came home with someone else’s blazer – I don’t think I noticed it wasn’t mine. I must have found this jacket on the back of the chair where I was sitting. When I came home my mom asked where my jacket was, and of course, I didn’t know what she was talking about. (My jacket had my initials sewn in). Anyway, my mom went to the school, and told the office no one was getting this jacket back until her daughter got her jacket back. By this time, so many things had been stolen from me at the school, and she had enough. She had one of the staff at the school go to each and every classroom and made every student take off their jacket until she found mine until she found the jacket with my embroidered initials. Needless to say, I was embarrassed beyond belief. That’s just one example of what type of mother my mom was.
In the last years of her life, while she struggled with dementia, and was bed bound, she made a new very special friend, Jimmy-Baby. Those two were so much alike in so many ways. They shared such a special bond. He was like the son she never had. They had their own special kind of vocabulary.
Due to her upbringing, mom never thought she was loved. I kept telling her, “No mom, everybody loves you.” It always made me cry when she said that. Everyday we told each other we loved each other and shared kisses, including the day she passed. I will always be grateful for that. Now my angel is with the angels in heaven. You will always be loved, and cherished forever. You are my heart. Tu sei Mia stella, Mia stella Bella. Tu sei Mia stellina, Cara Lina Mia.
