Obituary
Lillian Mary Hare
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Lillian Mary Hare (nee Friday) on Dec 28th, 2022. Lillian began her journey to the spirit world peacefully at her home in North Bay, Ontario. Lillian was a proud member of the Temagami First Nation, spending much of her childhood in the company of her grandparents John and Mary Turner on Bear Island in Lake Temagami, as well as returning to her little house she loved so much at the back of the Island in her later years.
She was the daughter of the late Edward “Gus” Friday and Jane Friday (nee Turner). Lillian had three sisters of whom she is survived by Judy Smerdon, while being predeceased by Donna Friday and Lois Charyna. Whenever the sisters gathered, there’d be stories and much laughter among all who were present. Lillian is also survived by her three children Marvin Hare (Robin Hare, Erin Smith), Janice Hare (John Willinsky), and Cindy Hare (Chris Mathias). Her grandchildren, Silas, Atticus, Jacob, and Avery, were a source of joy for her, as she was sure to always share their accomplishments on Facebook. She was no less of a grandmother to Julia and Sophie Turner, whom she loved dearly along with John and Patsy Turner. Auntie Lil will be missed by her many nieces and nephews.
Lillian served as a guidance counsellor at Chippewa Secondary School in North Bay for many years. It is there she mentored and befriended many Indigenous students, especially from Attawapiskat and the James Bay area, a number of whom kept in contact with her over the years. She impressed upon the students she supported, as well as her own children, the value of education and taking pride in their Indigenous identities. She modelled this herself by obtaining a Bachelor of Social Work from Laurentian University through summer courses.
Lillian always contributed to the Indigenous wellness of the communities where she lived, whether through the North Bay Native Friendship Center, where she was a founding member, and Canadore College, or the Healing and Wellness Center on Bear Island, where she worked for many years. Service to the community was important to her as she was on many committees, including a counsellor within the Temagami First Nation.
Her children would like to thank all of those who cared for Lillian while she received dialysis in Ottawa at the Riverside Hospital and at the North Bay Regional Health Center. Our gratitude also extends to Mary Montroy, Holly Guppy, Judy Montroy, and caretaker Holly, who all helped our mother with special outings and made her remaining time in North Bay enjoyable.
Donations can be made to the North Bay Indigenous Friendship Center (nbifc.org) in her honour. As with Anishinaabe tradition, a four-day fire has been lit for her to make her way to the spirit world. A Celebration of Life will be announced by the family as soon as arrangements are made.
