Obituary of Letitia Joy Bennett
The family of Letitia Joy Bennett are saddened to announce her peaceful passing at the age of 75, on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, in the Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow.
Born in New Glasgow on April 11, 1948, she was a daughter of the late Rev. H. Donald and Aleta G. (MacLean) Thomas. She possessed a strong faith in her Saviour from an early age. Joy was a member of Second United Baptist Church, New Glasgow where in her youth she was involved in Sunday School, Mission Band, CGIT, BYPU and Junior Choir. She enjoyed singing and had competed in the New Glasgow music festival.
In her youth she attended Temperance Street School, Brown School and New Glasgow Junior and Senior High Schools. In her high school years, she was an athlete, playing on the soccer team. She enjoyed playing neighbourhood baseball. Joy was an avid reader, an accomplished seamstress, having made many of her own outfits. She was a beautiful baker and very loyal Montreal Canadiens fan. Joy kept current with local and world affairs and was able to articulate her position on any matter. She enjoyed watching the passing wildlife from the comfort of her deck, especially the birds as they fed at the feeders. Joy was respectful of others and championed her strong Conservative views when ever possible. She enjoyed spending time with her two feline friends, Chirps and Naya. Joy possessed an internal beauty that was demonstrated through her smile, generosity, and loyalty.
Surviving are her daughter, Brianda “Brandi” Bennett, New Glasgow; sisters, Carolyn (Lee) Wilson, Knob Noster, Missouri; Sharma (Allan) Paris, Truro; Jan (Peter) Thomas-Giles, Dartmouth; brothers, Raymond Thomas, Dartmouth; Bryan Thomas, Sackville, N.B.; sister-in-law, Janie Thomas, New Glasgow; cousins, Glenda (Eugene) Jones, New Glasgow; Scott (Gloria) MacLean, New Glasgow; many nieces, nephews and cousins; close friends, the Williams family.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her twin sister, Lorraine Scott Thomas in infancy and sister, Cheryle Marie Thomas.
In honour of Joy’s wishes, a private graveside service will be held in Lorne Street Cemetery.
Joy’s family wish to thank Aberdeen Hospital Palliative Care Staff, Pictou County VON and friend, Sandra Anderson for the wonderful care Joy received.
Donations may be made in Joy’s memory to the Aberdeen Health Foundation Palliative Care Endowment.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
