Obituary
It is with profound sadness that the family of Frederick John Leslie O’Brien announce his passing. Les passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at the age of 88 years following a stroke.
Les was born on October 9, 1934 in Salmon Arm, BC. He was predeceased by his parents, Geoffrey and Emily O’Brien and his brother, Dan O’Brien. He will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife of 56 years, Jean O’Brien; his children, Betty (Warren) Price, Eugene O’Brien, Catherine (Kevin) Robillard, John (Kari) O’Brien, Michael (Sarah) O’Brien and his brother, Bill (Lynne) O’Brien. He was “Poppa” to numerous grandchildren, and great grandchildren and Uncle Les to many nieces and nephews. Family was very important to Les and we will all cherish the many memories we have made with him. His grandchildren were the light of his life and he was so very proud of their many accomplishments.
Les spent his life dairy farming in Tappen, BC. He married Jean in 1967 and they raised their family on the farm. He worked extremely hard all of his life and was always there to lend a helping hand. Being a farmer he rarely took a day off. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t fix, an animal he wouldn’t help with, or advice and support he wouldn’t give. Les was known for his kindness and his great sense of humour; he always enjoyed laughing with us over a funny story. He loved to discuss the weather and local interests with farmers over the fence lines, and always had a genuine interest in his community and time for a visit with tea.
In 2001 Les and Jean retired from the farm and moved into Salmon Arm. During his retirement Les took up bowling again, enjoyed a bit of gardening and spent time with his family. He and Jean took a dream trip and spent five weeks travelling through England, Scotland and his favourite, Ireland. He was even seen kissing the Blarney Stone!
Les had a bit of a stubborn streak which was evident right to the very end. If something needed to be fixed or maintained, he was the one who would take care of it, regardless of who else was offering assistance. As his mobility decreased, he would begrudgingly let someone help him, but he was always supervising to ensure the job was done right. He gave us all grey hair from time to time with his antics, as even at the age of 88 he could often be found climbing up precarious ladders, shovelling snow off the roof and even climbing up into trees to prune them.
Les will be cremated and a graveside service will be held at the Tappen Cemetery on August 26, 2023 at 11:00am where he will be laid to rest. The family would like to thank Dr. Dirk Bruegem for his care of Les over the years and the nurses at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital for their care and compassion shown during Les’ final hours. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the B.C. Young Farmers Association in Les’ memory. Dad, you will be deeply missed, forever loved and always remembered.
