Leon Wiernik
In his 91st year, Leon Wiernik died peacefully in his sleep in the early hours of Jan. 2, 2024. Born in Wegrow, Poland, he survived the Holocaust as a child, emigrating to Montreal at age 13. Leon became a successful women’s fashion designer, including for Sportscraft, travelling frequently to New York and Paris. He married the love of his life, Sandra Blustein, his wife for 60 years. In his heyday, Leon was the life of the party, an avid athlete and sports fan as well as a dedicated family man. Sandra devotedly tended to Leon during his decline due to Parkinson’s disease in the past two years. He was the beloved son of Chaim and Rachel Wiernik and sister, Minnie, who all perished in the Holocaust. He was predeceased by his aunts and uncles who cared for him in his teenage years as an orphan in Montreal. Leon is dearly missed by Sandra and his son Neil (Kim Hume), dear cousins Gita and Bill Kotansky, Norman and Linda Jaskolka and their families, beloved brother and sister-in-law Gerry and Phyllis Blustein, cousins-in-law Norman and Eileen Rosen, Sheilah and Morty Litwin and their families. Many thanks to the caring staff at Donald Berman Maimonides Geriatric Centre and the Jewish General Hospital. Graveside service on Wednesday, January 3 at 10:00 a.m. at the Farband Labour Zionist Organization Section, Kehal Israel Cemetery, D.D.O. In lieu of flowers, donations in Leon’s memory can be made to the Montreal Holocaust Museum’s new museum project, (514) 345-2605.
