Leon Guay Obituary
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leon Oscar Guay who passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, May 29th, 2024 at the age of 73.
Leon was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He leaves behind his devoted and loving wife of 52 years, Donna, and his loving children Brent (Pam) Guay and Kim MacMillan; his adored grandchildren Ryan (Nicole), Megan (Jorden), Cohen, Kaylee, Jessa and his great-grandson William.
Leon was born and raised in Athabasca and is the beloved son of Oscar and Verna Guay. He was the middle child of three and is survived by his sister Arlene (Garry) Milot and brother Lennie Guay. Leon was close to his extended family and loved by numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins who all played a huge role in his life.
Leon married his high school sweetheart Donna in 1971 and they raised their two children in Athabasca on the family farm. Leon started his career in road construction and then after several years Leon and Donna moved back to Athabasca so he could farm with his father Oscar. Leon spent the next 50 years grain farming, operating heavy equipment and working as a road construction Foreman. Even with failing health, Leon’s love of farming continued until his last days.
Leon was a lover of fast cars (especially his Superbee(s) and Dodge Challenger), hunting, camping, snow-mobiling and going to Yuma in the winter. He was known for his generosity, kindness and great sense of humor. Leon cherished spending time with his friends and loved ones, typically sharing stories while playing a game of cards or having a drink. Although taken too soon, Leon’s quiet presence and beautiful soul will never be forgotten.
The family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Leon Burger and Dr. Shaub who helped Leon navigate his complicated disease, IPF (Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis) and also the home and palliative care nursing professionals who were so supportive to Leon over the past few months.
A celebration of Leon’s life will be held on Saturday, June 22, 2024 at 11:00am at the Multiplex in Athabasca, Alberta. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Leon’s memory to the Athabasca Ladies Hospital Auxiliary Association.
