Leo Schweighardt
January 11, 1941 — December 7, 2024
Leo Albert Schweighardt passed away peacefully at the Langham Care Home on December 7, 2024 at age 83. He was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan on January 11, 1941. Leo spent his early years on the family farm and in his teens struck out to work in lumber mills in Tahsis, BC. He returned to Saskatchewan, to once again help out on the family farm. It was during this time that he met and married Eileen in October of 1961. Together they moved to Saskatoon where they raised 3 boys. It was at this point where Leo began working in the steel industry. This would become his life’s work. Initially he worked as labor in a rebar yard at AIM Steel but he eventually owned and operated his own business (McLellan Supply Ltd.). Here he worked until retirement at age 67.
The family home in Saskatoon was somewhat of a madhouse due to an «open-door» policy. Leo and Eileen always welcomed sisters, brothers, nieces, nephews, friends or children of a friends to come live with them for a day, a week, a month or even a couple of years while they went to school or University, needed to get away for a while, looked for a place when then moved to Saskatoon, or just wanted time to figure things out. Many of these people have approached me in recent months to express «how much of a positive influence he was», or «I wouldn’t be the person I am today without those times».
Leo was always ready with a joke, or a story intended to bring a smile to someone’s face. He likely had the largest catalogue of «little Johnny» jokes committed to memory of anyone on planet earth and he wasn’t afraid to use them. Leo loved Sunday dinners, backyard barbeques, and wiener roast fire pits with family and friends. He spent much of his recent years helping with maintenance at the townhouse complex where he lived. All his neighbors were grateful for his raking, shoveling and tidying around the facility.
Leo is survived by Eileen, his wife of 63 years; brothers, Henry Schweighardt and Victor Schweighardt; sons, Dale Schweighardt (Susan), Lyle Schweighardt (Patty), and Alan Schweighardt (Kathleen); step-daughter, Sharon Poirier (Maurice); grandchildren, Meagan Schweighardt, Rebecca Schweighardt Murrell (Jamal), Stephanie Schweighardt Midwinter (Derrick), Jessica Schweighardt, Sam Schweighardt, Willow Schweighardt, and Holly Boutin (Gilles); great-grandchildren, Harper Boutin and Addison Boutin; and nieces and nephews too numerous to name.
Leo’s afterlife care has been trusted to Saskatoon Funeral Home. A Prayer Service in Celebration of Leo’s Life will take place at Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Ave. N.) on January 11, 2025 (Leo’s Birthday) at 4:00 P.M.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimers Society of Saskatchewan would be appreciated.
