It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lena McDonell on July 18, 2023 at the age of 88 years with family by her side at St. Boniface Hospital, Winnipeg.
Lena Mathilda Jane McDonell (nee West) was born on November 28, 1934 in Marius, MB to Joseph A. West and Louisa M. Sutherland and was the youngest and last surviving member of her 7 siblings (Julia Whitford, Elma Wallman, Elsie Moore, Mary Hordeski, Alfred, Orville and Patrick West).
Lena grew up in Marius, MB and then got married in 1952 at age 17 to Tom Rivard and raised a family of 5 kids in Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie over the next 17 years. Lena later had two more sons, Rick and Mike and lived in Thunder Bay for a period. She used to love drawing, journaling, cooking, fishing, baking, sewing, knitting, daytime soap operas and could do anything and everything. She even drove a Mac Truck and used to be in the Powder Puff Races! She later met Gus and after being together for 7 years they tied the knot on December 31, 1985. Lena was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, aunty, great grandmother, friend, neighbor and would do anything for anyone. She was a creature of habit and even at 88 years old with her health declining still made sure that supper was ready for Gus when he got home from work!
Lena was predeceased by her parents and all of her siblings, her daughters Sherry Julia and Judy Rivard, her son Dean Rivard and recently her granddaughter Leona Claeys. She leaves to mourn her husband of the last 38 years Angus McDonnell, her daughter Josephine Beverly Brown, her sons John Rivard (Val), Joe Rivard, Rick Sorensen (Stacey) and Mike Rivard (Leah). Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren Sherry (Abby), Raymond and Paul Claeys, Bonnie (Doug) Murray, Ian (Amber) Dyck, Nichole and Taylor Searle Rivard, Amanda and Kassandra Sorensen, Mike Jr., Shawn, Andy, Jamie and Macayla Rivard as well as her step sons Angus (Jackie) and Dennis (Wendy), many nieces, nephews, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
A service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, August 18, 2023 at Bardal Funeral Home at 843 Sherbrook Street with interment to follow at Brookside Cemetery.
