Lawrence Cottenden Obituary
With great sadness the family of Lawrence Burton Cottenden (Burt) announce his passing on February 12, 2024, at Peterborough Regional Health Center. Burt was 82 years old.
Burt was born to Mildred (Walls) and Lorne Cottenden on September 28th, 1941, in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario.
Burt began his career in teaching in Rainy River, Ontario followed by teaching in Atikokan. In 1980, he was elected Treasurer of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation with support of many friends from the “North”. A position he held proudly for 8 years. Burt finished his career as an Account Executive with the Ontario Public School Teachers Federation before retiring in 1998.
Over the years Burt had many hobbies and interests: always an avid reader, gardener, wood working, he loved fishing in the summer and especially ice fishing in the winter, hunting, golf, and enjoying a sauna. Burt enjoyed running and used that hobby to proudly support the Terry Fox Foundation. Burt was always active in the kitchen especially in his retirement years. His creations ranged from jams, maple syrup, smoked meats, various breads, and baked goods from his bread maker(s). His baked buns were coveted at family gatherings and holidays.
Burt is survived by his wife Nicki, daughter Pam (Louis), his children Scott (Ann) and Lori (Brian) and his Grandpa’s Girls Kristina, Kelsey, Emily and Mackenzie, nephew Michael (Cindy), nieces Kathy (Jim) and Kristin, grandnephews Corbin, Nolan and Graham.
Burt was predeceased by his brother John (Mary) in 2020 and Chris (Joy) in 2022.
The family would like to thank the staff at Peterborough Regional Health Centre for the exemplary care and compassion during Burt’s stay at the Centre.
