Lavica Mahnke Obituary
Lavica Mahnke, late of Weyburn, SK passed away peacefully at Tatagwa View Care Home, Weyburn, SK on February 6, 2024 at the age of 97.
She was predeceased by her husband Arthur; her parents Robert and Varo Coleman; her siblings and their spouses: Violet and Priscilla (Edwin) Wright, Ursula (Mike) Hovland, Frank (Eva) Coleman, Ethel (Louis) Toeppner and Laverne (Ken) Mott; in-laws, Wilhelm and Fanny Mahnke, Edyth Mahnke, Harry (Edith) Mahnke, William Mahnke and Bernie Broshko.
Lavica is survived by her son Ron (Lois) Mahnke; grandson Kevin (Sheri) Mahnke; granddaughter Abbie (Brent) Velestuk; great-granddaughters: Mikaila, Tori and Keira Mahnke, Morgan Lowenberg and Alayna Velestuk; sister-in-law, Rita Broshko; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Lavica was born in Froude, SK and went to Hudmore country school and Froude School. Secondary School was taken through short classes at Moose Jaw and then summer schools and night classes. Over the next few years she taught at Warmly, Hudmore, Froude, and Griffin. In September 1949 she accepted a teaching position at Parkman. Art, Sask Wheat Pool Elevator Agent, was also the secretary of the local school board and met her at the train in Carlyle. He drove her to Parkman where she taught for one year and boarded with the Entwhistles.
Art and Lavica were married in Knox United Church, Froude on December 28th, 1950. The Wheat Pool transferred them to Handsworth in 1951 and Ron was born in 1952. Gramma Coleman, now widowed, moved in with them and looked after Ron so Lavica could return to teaching. In August of 1958, they moved to Creelman in the house beside her twin sister Laverne. Lavica taught a ½ year at Sequin School and 10 years in Creelman.
In 1970, Art took a transfer to Moosomin and Ron began university in Saskatoon. Lavica worked at the local Co-op Hardware store as well as doing some substitute teaching. Ron and Lois were married in 1974 in Moosomin and Art and Lavica moved to Indian Head at Christmas. Lavica continued teaching during their subsequent moves to Balcarres, Qu’Appelle and Fort Qu’Appelle. Art retired in 1985 and Lavica in 1986 and they finally bought a house of their own in Fort Qu’Appelle.
Through their 58 years of marriage they enjoyed music, dancing, bowling, hockey, curling, playing cards’, fishing, and gardening. Lavica found a church and a music group and/or choir to sing with in every community she lived in. Of course, being a member of the church also meant pitching in with their activities and committees.
In 2006, they left the house in Fort Qu’Appelle and moved to Regina and then Weyburn. Art passed away suddenly in March 2008 and Lavica filled her time with the choir and activities at
Grace United Church, activities at the Wheatland Senior Centre, singing with the Variations singing group, line dancing, quilting and knitting. She also had a garden plot, the bounties of which she shared, and enjoyed baking for friends and family.
Lavica downsized and moved into her Condo in 2013. She continued all her activities until she acquired balance issues and went into respite at Lampman Community Health Centre, across the street from Ron and Lois, in 2020. She decided that same year that she would rather be in Weyburn so was transferred to Tatagwa View. She participated in most of the activities provided until shortly before she passed away. We are eternally grateful for the kind and compassionate care she received while there.
Her greatest joys were singing, and supporting her son, grandchildren and great grandchildren in their many endeavours. She lived a long life full of love and music.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. from Grace United Church, Weyburn, SK with Rev. M. Barnabas officiating. Luncheon will follow at Upper Grace Hall, Weyburn, SK. An interment will be held at a later date at Regina memorial Gardens Cemetery, Regina, SK.
