Laverne John Heath, passed away into the presence of God with his loving niece Carolyn by his side, on January 22, 2023, twelve days away from celebrating his 100th birthday.
Laverne was born on February 3, 1923 in Listowel, Ontario to his late parents Melinda (Fisher) and John Heath. He was the eldest of five boys. Reunited with his brother Clifford Heath, sister-in-law Evelyn Heath, and niece Janice Horvath and her first husband Stephen. Also greeting him are brothers Stuart Heath and Harold Heath, sisters-in-law Shirley Heath and Dona Heath and niece Kathleen Cuerden. Laverne is survived by his brother Doug Heath of Coco, Florida, sister-in-law Bonnie Heath of Goderich, many cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great-great nieces and nephews and friends.
He brought a peaceful, steady, and supportive presence to his family and friends. Laverne enjoyed theatre, travel and often would do so with various family members. He was a maker and creative who could build nearly anything, with special skills in electrical work. Laverne was a highly independent, hard worker and brought much determination and perseverance to the ways he would overcome challenges, including the poliovirus which infected him at the age of two.
He shared his creative talents and love of cooking with his family, including teaching some how to bake bread and passing on his Christmas plum pudding recipe that he faithfully prepared and brought to family gatherings. Laverne enjoyed fishing trips with his coworkers at Blackstone where he was employed for 31 years. He was an avid gardener and was treasurer of the Stratford Horticultural Society for 21 years. His love of family was deep. His love of jigsaw puzzles, deep conversations, card and board games and crokinole brought out his sharp mind and sense of playfulness and sometimes competitiveness. For many years he was treasurer for the “Zurbrigg reunion.” Laverne was a faithful member of Elgin Missionary Church where he served by counting offering.
Special thanks to Deacon Fred Lindner and Pastor Lloyd Oakey for visiting Laverne and all of the support received from church members. The family is also extremely grateful for the loving care Laverne received while a resident of Greenwood Court. He first moved into an apartment in 2009. He transitioned to the Loft in 2013 and following a stroke in 2021, moved into the Colonial Unit. Laverne was grateful to call Greenwood “home”. The expertise, love, and support of each one of the staff will never be forgotten. Also, special thanks to Stuart Lender for his compassionate guidance.
As per Laverne’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation on Friday, February 3, 2023, from 1-2 pm. A celebration of his life will be held immediately following at 2 pm, at Elgin Missionary Church, 4192 Perth County Line 36, Stratford.
