We lost a distinguished and elegant lady on July 28th. We will miss her endearing smile that could light up a room, her sense of humour, love of life, and the ability to touch people in a unique way, throughout her 95 years.
She wasted no time carving out her place in life. She was the youngest student at the time to graduate high school in Kitchener, worked her summers as a Farmerette here in Niagara, graduated as a Pharmacist from the University of Toronto, and worked 50 years at many different hospitals and pharmacies, helping make people’s lives better.
She was a Duplicate Bridge Bronze Life Master, a world traveller, a cottager in Penetang, a theatre patron, and an owner of thoroughbred racehorses who loved to cheer the horses down the stretch.
As a Mother, she actively supported her children in so many ways encouraging their endeavours in figure skating, local theatre and many other sporting events. The acquisition of a pony named «Stormy» in the early days eventually led to an equestrian farm on Pelham Street in Fonthill that grew many fond family memories over the years.
Her husband Gordon (2013) was not only her kindergarten classmate, but best friend for 63 years. Together they had three children, Stephen (Robin) of Fonthill, Kristine (2019 ) (Nizar 2010 ) Akilie, and Kimberly of St. Catharines. Caring Grandmother to Philip (Nicola), Matthew (Tianna), Gordon (Nicole),and Step Grandmother to Richard and Malek (Layal) Akilie, and family. Great Grandmother to Everett and Frances Kaiser, and Amira and Aiman Akilie-Stark.
Loving sister to the late Lois (late Richard) Siegner and Bill (Shirley) Allendorf of Kitchener.
Laurie faced a host of medical challenges over the last ten years, however her radiant smile and positive outlook on life, endured until the end. She would want us to thank her special friends who helped her over those final years. You made every day better for her, and we hope she made every day a little better for you.
To those people at Heatherwood and Niagara Gardens, you taught us that growing old surrounded by caring people can be a beautiful thing.
The circle of life continues and we hold our heads high knowing that we are privileged to have shared our life with this incredible lady. She left a trail of beautiful memories and friendships along the way.
Cremation has taken place and a private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date this Fall. Anyone wishing to attend may phone the Pelham Funeral Home at (905-892-5762) to request an invitation.
