It is with broken hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of our much-loved dad, grandpa, brother, uncle, neighbour and friend, Laurence Kawa. Dad passed away at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon after a courageous battle with lung cancer.
He was predeceased by his father, Anton (1979), mother, Lillian (2003), several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and co-workers.
Dad enjoyed the simple pleasures in life; family, fishing, hunting, curling, golfing, a game of cribbage and a cold OV. Nothing made him happier than cuddling a baby or telling a good joke.
He was born in Kelvington and raised on the farm in the Kinloch area. He attended public school in Kinloch and high school in Kelvington. Following high school, dad ventured into the workforce trying his hand at carpentry, construction, logging and fighting fires.
In 1966 he obtained employment at Greenwater Lake Provincial Park where he built his career, family and home. During this time, he created lifelong friends who became our extended family. Oh, the stories he could tell!! We were SO fortunate to grow up where we did.
In 1997 dad was offered early retirement after 31 years of service with the provincial government. Shortly following retirement, the grandchildren started to arrive. This was a role where dad thrived. He was such a proud grandpa and relished the opportunity to play, joke, watch the grandchildren in their activities and pass on life lessons and his passions.
Dad was not one for pomp and circumstance or emotion. But, in his own quiet, patient, unassuming way, he let us know we were loved. Dad carried his pain quietly and rarely complained, showing care and concern for his family until the very end. We will honor dad’s memory by embracing the values he held dear; loving family, cherishing friendships, working hard but also taking time to enjoy the simple pleasures in life.
He leaves behind his children Andrea (Rob) Lamont, Erin (Tyler) Delwisch, Graeme (Sarah) Kawa, as well as 7 treasured grandchildren; Carter & Blake Lamont; Derek, Kennedy and Carson Delwisch; Emerson & Hudson Kawa. Sisters, Maureen (Wayne), Florence, and brother Darel (Sharon) as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
“Go rest high on that mountain, son your work on earth is done.”
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Porcupine Carragana Hospital and Royal University Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Porcupine Carragana Hospital Memorial Fund.
A private family interment will occur at a late date.
