Larry Van Wormer Obituary
Larry died suddenly at home in Port Elgin, Ontario on Thursday, December 19, 2024, after suffering a fall. He had been stoically battling Parkinson’s and heart diseases for several years with the Parkinson’s symptoms becoming more acute in the last few weeks of his life. He was 77 years old.
Larry was born in Vedder Crossing, British Columbia; brother to Carole Eaton of Wasaga Beach, Ontario and Ken Van Wormer of Chilliwack, British Columbia. Larry enjoyed a career as an engineer at the Bruce Heavy Water Plant, retiring in 2004.
Larry will be sadly missed by longtime friends Vic and Marilyn Day of Port Elgin. He was a valued member of their extended family and was cherished as Uncle Larry by their children Keith Day, Karen Dunn and Glen Day. In recent years the Day and Dunn grandchildren provided much joy to Larry. Summer evenings were spent cheering at the baseball diamond or passing on fishing knowledge; in the winter he was a regular at the arena supporting their hockey teams or at figure skating. Larry enjoyed hiking, especially exploring MacGregor Point Provincial Park with Karen and her children. Larry and Vic were friends for 51 years and along with Keith shared a passion for cars and motorcycles which translated into happy hours adjusting carburetors and re-building engines.
Larry leaves great memories for his many friends. He always looked forward to getting together with his childhood friend, John Howard of London, Ontario and they spent many an hour together golfing; he was a terrible golfer, a perfect friend for another terrible golfer. He thoroughly enjoyed exploring France with his good friends Phil Connor and Phil Low, affectionately known as “The Three Amigos”. One of his favourite trips was driving Route 66 from Chicago to LA with Phil. Larry was always very interested in the Connor and Low children and grandchildren; he was welcomed as part of their families.
He enjoyed the theatre and, along with his fellow enthusiast Mary Jane Low, was a regular patron of the Stratford Festival Theatre. His all-time favourites were the Restoration Comedies. He was an avid reader and had a lifetime love of science fiction and fantasy.
Larry loved music and was so passionate about achieving the best sound possible that he made his own speakers. He was a tinkerer, a designer, a builder, curious about anything mechanical that he could take apart to see how it worked and then how to make it better.
He was a connoisseur of fine wines, great beers, coffees, cheeses and apples. He was a dedicated community volunteer with the Horticultural Society, the Rail Trail, Meals on Wheels, the SDSS former greenhouse and the Bruce Power Pensioners Association.
Above all Larry was a good friend, always willing to lend a hand to help with any repairs or projects that his friends had on the go.
