Obituary
LARRY ALAN BONTER’s LIFE
Larry was born in a small house on Nicholas St, Trenton, Ontario Dec 8 th , 1948.
He is the youngest son of 3 boys to the late Robert and Marie Bonter of Trenton, Ontario.
Survived by his brothers Howard (the late Sharon) and Wayne Bonter (Candace) both of
Trenton.
He was married for just over 52 years to Deborah Bonter (nee Ament) and loving father of
Terry Bonter and Darren Bonter (Jennifer). Dear grandfather to Breanne and Ryan (St.
Thomas) and Dilynn and Jenson (Trenton). Uncle to Greg (Laura), Cyndy (Ron), and the late
David (Jamie) Bonter.
Prior to his retirement, his work history varied. He grew up as a teenager in Niagara Falls
working for Burgess Battery. He lived with his late uncle Joe and Aunt Nellie. He moved
back to Trenton in his late teens / early 20’s where he began to work with wire and cable
companies, Fabricon (Trenton) and Canada Wire (Belleville) until both plants closed. It was
at this time he managed the Trenton Golf Course (behind Trenton Memorial Hospital) for
several years. He loved to golf when he could and made many a friends doing so. His next
employer was Glen Miller Paperboard Company (Glen Miller, ON) and later downsized. This
company later changed their name to Cascades Sonoco which is now permanently closed as
well. The day after he was released from the Paperboard he was hired by Quaker Oats
(Trenton, ON) until he retired. Needing something for him to do than golf everyday he went
to work at Walmart where he worked in the produce department for several years. He had
many of his golf buddies, former co-workers and new friends too who would always stop and
talk to him.
A couple of years prior to his Walmart retirement, on a clear day Sept 2012 his wife Debbie
was hit by an impaired driver and spent 4-1/2 months in the hospital. Larry had not cooked
for himself, taken care of the finances or kept up the house etc. After a few years he showed
a steady decline in his health and he decided to retire once again without his wife knowing.
His health progressively changed after that. In March of 2019 he was diagnosed with
Alzheimer’s. Larry’s disease progressed quickly in Jan. 2022 and he was admitted into
Westgate Lodge Nursing Home March 2022. On Jan 10th , 2023 his health declined even
further in the Nursing Home and was sent to Belleville General Hospital with a Respiratory
Infection and progressed to pneumonia. He passed away peacefully at Westgate Lodge, Belleville
on Tuesday, January 31st, 2023 at the age of 74.
Keeping with Larry’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends are invited to visit at
WEAVER Life Centre – East Chapel, 29 Bay St. Trenton on Monday, February 13th, 2023 from
12 – 1 PM. A Celebration of Larry’s Life will take place at 1 PM. Reception to follow.
