Kourken “Ken” Noris Bedirian, passed away suddenly on February 13, 2023. He was 85 years old.
Ken is predeceased by Anahid, his devoted wife of 32 years and will be deeply missed by his loving daughters, Naro (Dennis), Vani (Mark), and nephew Mher (Niki). “Baboug” adored his grandchildren, Sam, Annie, Daniel, Duncan, as well as Alex and Leo.
Kourken was born in Kessab, Syria, on August 16, 1937 to Noris and Lydia (Ashekian) Bedirian. Brother of Assadour, Asdghig, Loucine, Parouhi, Papken. Uncle to Manas, Moushegh, Mher, Steve, Ara, Zeron, Vani, Ankiné, Krysia, Kristen; and Vahakn, Hovag, Hratch, Chanel and Barkev on his wife’s side.
At age 15, he left his village to continue his education in Beirut, where he met Anahid. He received his BSc (1962) and MSc (1964) in Agriculture from American University of Beirut. In 1968, he immigrated to Canada with his young family. After completing his PhD at McGill University in 1973, he settled his family in Ontario, where he pioneered the process of embryo transfer in cattle. In the years that followed, Ken travelled extensively, teaching this procedure to veterinarians around the world. Eventually, Ken started his own dairy farm in Rockwood and, utilizing his expertise and hard-work ethic, was able to create a top-producing herd in a matter of years. More importantly, the farm was a gathering place for extended family and friends; many who knew him have fond memories of visits to the farm.
Ken had a youthful soul who was the life of the party, enjoying the company of others with a hearty laugh. He had an adventurous spirit and curious mind. He told silly jokes, but also pondered deep, philosophical questions.
Ken spent his retirement in Cambridge. Returning to his roots, he converted his back yard into a garden and greenhouse, the bounty of which he shared abundantly. It was both his pride and his passion. Just like the farm, many have fond memories of enjoying a coffee and a chat in his gazebo. He spent his spare time researching topics of interest, watching documentaries, reading books, solving Sudoku puzzles, volunteering, and planning his next project. He enjoyed listening to classical music, a pastime he shared with his brother Papken.
Ken made friends easily due to his positive energy and outgoing personality. Life brought him joy. He lived each day to the fullest, yet remained humble, deeply appreciating the people around him. He wanted to live to be 100; he will live in our hearts forever.
