Obituary
Kory Neidig passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Elk Valley Hospital on October 26, 2023, after a lengthy illness with kidney disease. Kory was born to parents Ernest Jr. (Sonny) and Louise Neidig on November 15, 1945, in Fernie, BC, the fourth of five children.
Kory is survived by his wife of 56 years, May (Nettie). The high school sweethearts married on April 29, 1967. He is also survived by his sons Wayne, Shayne (Trista), step-grandchildren Bailee, Rylee, Julie and Miranda and grandson Zach and great granddaughter Haven and daughter Jennifer (Todd Barr) and grandchildren Hailey (Justin), Erika (Alex), Bryson, Jacob and Beckam.
Kory is also survived by brother Marvin (Trish) and sisters Trudy (Jim) and Cheryl (Doug) and sister-in-law Doreen and numerous nieces and nephews.
Kory was pre-deceased by his parents Sonny and Louise and brother Allan.
Kory’s working career started in his early teens at Fernie Meat Market as a delivery boy. He then followed his brothers in becoming a fire fighter with Fernie Fire Department (serving as Fire Chief for a time), worked underground at Balmer, hauled coal and later logs for Fred Sowchuk Trucking. In 1973 Kory moved his young family to Richmond, BC where he worked fueling jet planes at Vancouver International Airport and then worked for the City of Richmond. Moving back to Fernie in 1981 he began long haul trucking for Kiki & Sons Trucking. After about a decade he wanted to be home more with family and began an eight-year stint with the Nohels Group. Eight more years followed hauling logs with J. Rybachuk & Sons Trucking before finishing his career with 12 years at Teck Elkview, the last 2 and a half years working alongside his son Shayne.
Kory loved hunting and fishing with his father-in-law Stan Wasiewicz and quadding during his Teck years and into retirement years. In 1994 Kory joined his son Wayne
on the Executive of the Fernie Ghostriders Junior Hockey Club. Joined by May, the three of them operated the Concession stand for the team for six seasons at the Fernie Memorial Arena. Kory loved it when he was able to spend time with Jennifer and his grandchildren, Bryson, Jacob and Beckam who were his trusty helpers. In his final years Kory developed a love for reading.
No service by request. The family may have a small gathering at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an organization or charity of the donor’s choice.
Kory’s family would like to thank the doctors who cared for him, especially Dr. Soetaert and Dr. Rodrigue, his many nurses and home care aides. He had his favourites…you know who you are.
