Obituary of Kevin Alan Cowley
It is with heavy hearts that we say good-bye to our Dad, Grandpa, brother and uncle. Kevin Alan Cowley passed away peacefully at the Hospice at Glengarda on July 25, 2023, at the age of 62, after a 4½ year battle with cancer.
Kevin was the 4th child born to Ron and Lucille (Betty) Cowley (of Riverhurst) at Central Butte, SK on December 1, 1960. He and his twin brother Keith were just shy of being the provincial record for the biggest weight for twins.
Kevin attended Grade 1 in Rockglen, then on to Canora where he graduated from Canora High School in 1978.
After graduating, his career path took him to various sales positions at Camera Craft, Paymaster, G & S Distributors, and then CJGX Radio in Yorkton. Shortly after marrying in 1984, a new path began and Kevin and his wife moved to Regina where he started a new job at the Leader Post. His two precious daughters were born there – Kristy (1985) and Amanda (1987).
His subsequent transfer to Dauphin saw him overseeing the paper’s newest acquisitions, Dauphin and Roblin newspapers, which he proudly restored to strong results. Kevin always had a great love for country music and was a co-founder of the Dauphin Countryfest, which he put his heart and soul into… and it is still running today, 33 years later.
In 1992, he headed to Yorkton This Week & Enterprise as Advertising Manager for 5 years before being transferred back to the Leader Post in Regina and later to Saskatoon.
Kevin was always so extremely proud of “his girls”, as he affectionately referred to them. They were his world. He would tell everyone and anyone how beautiful and special they were to him. His world got even bigger as grandchildren started arriving, he absolutely loved being a Grandpa and the bragging continued. They were such an important part of his life and they filled his heart every day.
Kevin had a great love for animals, especially dogs. Teddy, his granddaughter’s dog held a special place in his heart and came to visit at both St. Paul’s palliative care ward and the Hospice at Glengarda, as per Kevin’s request, even in his last days.
His heart of gold and commitment to his community was so evident by the time he spent volunteering with Lions Club, Kinsmen Club and of course, many years believing in “all I need is a Miracle” with TeleMiracle. Telemiracle was something that wasn’t just a hobby or something Kevin volunteered at, it held so much meaning to him, and he not only shared his love for what Telemiracle did and was with “his girls”, but also shared it with his grandchildren. Kevin took great pride in serving with the Kinsmen and thoroughly enjoyed and embraced his time helping with Craven Big Valley Jamboree now known as Country Thunder. His love for country music will live on in his girls and grandchildren.
Kevin was one of the kindest people you could meet, he made friends everywhere he went. He was very compassionate, laughed endlessly and was known as a great storyteller. He loved travelling and had a passion for photography. He especially loved photographing bald eagles and his family. Another great love of his was spending time at his sister and brother-in-law’s farm which also included visiting his nieces.
Kevin’s passion as a salesperson continued in working for an alarm security company, selling aerial photos of properties throughout Western Canada. He then moved onto Envirowise, Valen, and Hazmaster. Many of his business contacts became lifelong friends.
He will be joining his predeceased parents, Ron and Lucille Cowley and a special cousin Debbie.
Kevin will be very sadly missed by his daughters Kristy Knudtson and Amanda Blake as well as grandchildren Skyler, McKenzie, and Jaslynn. Siblings left behind include Arlene Jaster (Les), Norm Cowley (Vanessa), Glenda Lazurko (Dale), Keith Cowley (Cheryl), plus many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews that were dear to him.
Honorary urn bearers include Heather, Bob and Carol, Dave, Rene, Dennis, Bob, Sharon, Herb, Myra, Koralee as well as numerous great friends… too many to mention.
Memorial donations in memory of Kevin may be made to the Kinsmen Foundation (2217C Hanselman Court, Saskatoon, SK, S7L 6A8), the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation (1702 20th Street West, Saskatoon, SK, S7M 0Z9), or to the Hospice at Glengarda (301 Hilliard Street East, Saskatoon, SK, S7J 0E5).
