We, the family of Kenneth Rupert Cross, regret to announce his passing on Saturday, June 1, 2024 in the An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born January 18, 1928, he was the son of the late Percy and Elizabeth (Eavis) Cross.
Born and raised in Louisbourg, he spent his later years in Catalone and Marion Bridge. In his late teens he started his life on the sea, joining the Merchant Marines then later became a lifelong fisherman. Dad wore many hats, from fisherman to boat builder to carpenter; a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters & Joiners Local 1588. He was a boat builder for more than fifty years, having constructed his first boat at age 21 and building at least fifty wooden vessels over the years. Many hours were spent in the boathouse with good friends, Benny Fudge, Leo Carter, Billy Barter and many more, with many a bottle of rum drunk along the way. His most remarkable accomplishment is the 18th century design Chaloupe he built for the Fortress of Louisbourg. Some of his vessels have sailed as far as the Great Lakes.
He was an avid hunter up into his eighties, passing the love of hunting and fishing to his son, Blair. Over the years he enjoyed many a hunting trip with his son, brothers and nephews. Always a musician, he played guitar and sang, even in his final days in hospital; serenading the doctors and nurses.
Kenneth is survived by wife, Mary (Rideout); daughters Debbie Horton, Shirley MacInnis, Denise Dean (Aaron) and Kim Wadman (Donnie); son, Blair (Heather); step-daughters, Marie Troke (Maurice) and Annabelle Rideout (Paul); grandchildren, David Horton, Aimee MacIntyre (Sheldon), Kim MacInnis, Tiffany Fader (Jeff) and Cory MacInnis (Katie Carroll); step-grandson, Mitchell Troke; great-grandchildren, Liam, Winter, Noah, Lachlan, Kiden, Ainsley and Callie.
Also survived by siblings, Esther Cross, Florence (late Ross DeYoung), Donald (Isobel) and Donna (late Malcolm MacDonald). He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy (Fifield); siblings, Irene (late John Axani), Harold (late Eileen), Richard (late Georgina) and Allan (late Olga); and son-in-law, Clarence MacInnis.
Cremation has taken place under the direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. Interment will take place at Willow Grove Cemetery in Louisbourg at 2 pm on Saturday, June 8th for family and close friends.
We would like to thank the doctors and nurses of 3A/4A at the CBRH, the An Cala Palliative Care Unit and the sitters from Osprey Angels for the care and compassion they showed our Dad over the past months. We would also like to thank the staff at Sydney Memorial Chapel for their professionalism and care.
Memorial donations may be made to the An Cala Palliative Care Unit, Sydney.
