Kenneth’s Obituary
Kenneth Royce McKay
September 24, 1944 – November 16, 2024
With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kenneth Royce McKay, aged 80, on November 16, 2024, after a long illness.
Ken was born on September 24, 1944, in Canterbury, NB, a place he held dear throughout his life. A devoted and loving partner to Dale, Ken shared his warmth, kindness, patience, and wisdom with an extended family and left a legacy of generosity and compassion.
Ken is survived by his beloved partner, Dale Patterson; his son, Hugh (Charlene); and his brother, Jerry McKay. He is fondly remembered by Dale’s family: Laurie Little, Darla Slipp (John), Lisa Morissette (Richard), and Nancy Patterson; his grandchildren: Colin, Liam, Dustin (Susannah), Adrian, Cameron (Gaya), Sarah, Carley (Cory), Danielle, Celine, and Rachel; and his great-grandchildren: Garrett, Gabrielle, and Michael.
Ken was predeceased by his wife, Judy McKay (Patterson); his parents, John and Rowena McKay; his brothers, Jack (Hilary) and Robert McKay (Helen); Laurie’s husband, Michael; and his granddaughter, Sophie.
A storyteller at heart, Ken delighted in recounting tales of his childhood in Canterbury and his days working in the woods. Known for his baked beans, brown bread, and chocolate pie, Ken’s culinary creations brought family and friends together. He loved the beauty of the river valley and had a soft spot for wildlife, often feeding and caring for animals in need and coaxing a stray back home.
Ken took pride in his work, which included contributing to significant projects such as building the lakefront at Château Lake Louise and preparing Canada Olympic Park for the 1988 Winter Olympics. Returning to his New Brunswick roots, he operated heavy equipment on numerous special projects across the province.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported and cared for Ken during his illness. Special gratitude goes to the Extramural staff, the Upper River Valley Hospital team, and Josie from Bayshore for their kindness and compassion.
To honor Ken’s memory, donations can be made in lieu of flowers to the Carleton County Animal Shelter or the River Valley Cancer Support Group.
Visitation will take place from 1 pm – 3 pm on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Scott’s Funeral Home in Woodstock with interment service to follow at St. Joseph’s Church in Newburg.
Ken’s warmth, wisdom, and generous spirit will be deeply missed but forever treasured by all who knew him.
