Kenneth Allen Hockin
July 25,1933 – August 11, 2024
Ken, known as Buddy, was born to Clarence Hockin and Eva Jackman Hockin of Courtice, Ontario, and had three sisters: Norma, Dorothy, and Patricia. The family later moved to Bowmanville, Ontario, where he became active in sports, drama and singing in his first quartet, while in High School. He also developed his lifelong love for reading, cars, and the games of poker and golf. The Poker Club was a huge part of Ken and Elva’s social life.
He married Elva Pearl Bradley in 1955; a local nurse who graduated from McLaughlin Hall in Oshawa. They went on to have and raise three children Lee Anne, Bradley, and Jill.
A young Ken tried a few different occupations and businesses until he found a flair for, and home with Real Estate. He owned and operated his own successful brokerage for many years – at its height – with offices in Cobourg, Port Hope, and Bowmanville. He was in his element cruising the backroads of Northumberland and Durham Counties showing farms, homes, and land to whomever would listen. He and the business were a big part of the community; sponsoring teams, emceeing events, and appearing as Santa Claus in the annual parade! Ken participated in the Rotary Club, was a past president, and a Paul Harris Fellow.
His love of singing, cultivated in High School and church choir, stayed with him his whole life. He sang at many weddings and social events. He was a part of two very successful quartets, performed in musical theater and “Cornzapoppin” and later joined the men’s barbershop choruses “The Dukes of Harmony” of Scarborough and “The Tidesmen” of Nanaimo in BC. He thoroughly enjoyed the singing, camaraderie, performances, and competitions with all of these groups.
Ken’s passion for telling jokes, stories, singing, and “holding court” with any captive audience showcased his wit and amazing sense of humour. That stayed with him through all of his 91 years, and he remained “with it” enough to craft a joke that would slide into any conversation, on any topic.
He was a loyal and loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, friend, businessman, and entertainer.
He is greatly missed by: his sister Dorothy, children LeeAnne ( Alex) , Brad, Jill (Greg), his grandchildren Sandy, Julian ( Pompie), Kelly (Jason), Lee (Carl), James, Cole, Wade, and Janine. Also, great grandchildren: Sangay, Kungzang, Christopher, and Clark.
He was predeceased by his parents, sister Norma, younger sister Pat, and by Elva, his wife of 51 years.
Visitation and Remembrance gathering will be held at Morris Funeral Chapel in Bowmanville, Ontario on Thursday, October 24 from noon to three p.m.
Ashes to be interred at Bowmanville cemetery at 3:30 p.m.
Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or any charity of your choice. All are welcome.
