Ken McCreath, 84, passed away at home on March 15, 2024 of a heart attack
Born May 10, 1939 in Winnipeg, middle child of Charlie and Freda McCreath. Ken grew up in Winnipeg, catching the radio bug while in high school at Glenlawn Collegiate.
He started his radio career in the late 1950s, working in places like Fort Frances, Brandon, Moose Jaw and Regina before returning to Winnipeg to work at CJOB radio. He married Joyce Evans in September 1960, and their son Chuck was born in 1962
In 1965 he moved his family to Calgary. He spent 3 years at CFAC radio, before moving to CBC radio Calgary in 1968.The family increased when his daughter Karen was born in 1967.
In late 1969 the family moved to Toronto, where Ken worked in the CBC Toronto radio newsroom, covering local and provincial stories from Queen’s Park
In 1974, Ken returned to Calgary and became CBC’s first National Reporter, covering news of national interest on the Prairies and the North. He covered both Federal and Provincial elections for CBC radio, as well as most of the Royal visits to the region. He spent several years covering the Berger pipeline inquiry in the Yukon and NWT. In 1982 he was sent to Argentina to cover the Falklands “War”.
Never one to stay in one place long – Ken spent most of the 1980s as the Parliament Hill Bureau chief in Ottawa. Ken and Joyce bought a house on a small amount of land just outside Ottawa, in Carp, Ontario, where they both developed a love for the country life.
Ken and Joyce returned to Calgary in 1989, purchasing a property just south of Bragg Creek, where they have lived for the past 35 years. As well as covering elections and Royal tours, Ken covered the war in Bosnia in 1992, and provided some training during a visit to Japan.
After retiring from the CBC in 1993, Ken kept busy doing voice overs for local Calgary companies, joined the local Priddis volunteer fire department and provided press release and PR for several local and provincial candidates.
Ken is survived by his wife of 63 years Joyce; his children Chuck and Karen; his four grandchildren Jacqueline, Thomas, Brooklyn and Brysco; his great-grand daughter Elin; and his younger brother Fred.
At Ken’s request, there will be no funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada in Ken’s name.
