It is with great sadness to announce the unexpected passing of Ken M. Mah at the age of 94.
He was predeceased by both parents; his beloved wife, Yee; and his sister, Margarette Wong.
He is survived by his daughter, Marian (Raymond); sons, Edwin (Petty) and Ernest (Allyson); and grandchildren, Sophie and Amelie.
Ken was born in 1930 in a small village in Toishan, Guangdong, China. Because his father was in Canada and the family was unable to join him, Ken spent much of his early years in Hong Kong with his mother and maternal grandparents. He was schooled in both Chinese and English. When WWII broke out and the Japanese invaded, the family returned to mainland China as food was being rationed. Times were extremely tough during the war, but the family survived through Ken’s ingenuity and his mother’s mindful actions.
After the war, Ken returned to Hong Kong to finish his schooling. It was here where he met the love of his life, Yee, in high school. They continued their relationship from afar after Ken came to Canada to join his father in 1951. Their love prevailed and eventually Yee joined him in 1957. They married soon after and together raised a family of three children. In their later years, they traveled the world together and were highly involved with their two precious grandchildren.
Ken was a visionary and had a knack for business. He grew and modernized a small grocery store initially started by his father, partnered in a number of restaurants and along with his wife Yee, ran a successful flower shop. He helped establish the Edmonton Chinatown Credit Union and was one of the founding members of Alberta Grocers Wholesale, for which he served as Treasurer for 10 years. Outside of his business ventures, Ken had a passion for the stock market and loved watching football, especially the Edmonton Eskimos.
Ken had a kind heart and was generous with his time as a volunteer. He was very active with many of the Chinese community associations and clubs. He helped many friends and family who were seeking a better life immigrate from China to Canada. Ken was loved and respected by all and will be missed.
The family would like to thank Dr. Christopher Gee, the caregivers from Bayshore Home Health, and everyone at MacTaggart Place for their warmth and kindness in taking such good care of Ken and making his final years as comfortable as possible.
There will be a private family and friends gathering at Connelly-McKinley on December 14, 2024.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Funeral Home.
