Ken Hillyer Obituary
Passed away peacefully at Summit Place in Owen Sound on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Born on Monday, April 22, 1940, Kenneth Joseph Hillyer of Owen Sound, was in his 85th year.
Beloved husband and best friend of the late Carol Hillyer (nee Millier). Proud father of David Hillyer (Heather), Sherri Grandine (Craig) and Bradley Hillyer, all of Owen Sound. Loving grandfather of Quentin (Shelby), Rebecca (Johann), Elizabeth (Will), Chelsea, Drew and Charles (Camila). Cherished great-grandfather of Myles, Maelyn, Eden, Hannah, Hazel and Elsie. Dear brother of Gloria Mackie and Wayne Hillyer (Virginia). Ken will be also missed by his many nieces, nephews and friends.
Predeceased by his parents William and Lucinda Hillyer, and his siblings Bill Hillyer, Jean Horne, Grace Toman, Ruth Belsey, John Hillyer, Shirley Eames, Joan Thomson, Betty Byers and Pat Clark.
Ken was employed by VanWyk packaging for 44 years until he retired at the age of 65. He became an active member of his community and was well known for his participation in the Knights of Columbus as a 4th degree knight and a member of the Silver C’s. He was a passionate volunteer for the annual Salmon Spectacular, the Festival of Northern Lights, and Meals on Wheels. Ken found joy watching for Great Lakes shipping and would often be found spending hours under the Sarnia bridge watching out for any ships that would pass. He collected memorabilia from this hobby and will fondly be remembered as “Shore Captain”. Ken’s love for his family will be one of the many memories we hold dear to our hearts.
A memorial service to celebrate Ken’s life will be held at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, 554 15th Street East, Owen Sound, on July 30th at 11:00 am with visitation one hour prior. Interment will take place in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Brian E. Wood Funeral Home, Owen Sound, 519-376-7492.
