In the afternoon of November 21, Keith passed away suddenly and peacefully at home. He told God “I want to die in my sleep”. He did it his way, just as he lived his life.
He leaves behind his wife Karen, son Brad, grandson Ethan, daughter Michelle (Scott), grandchildren Paige, Brynn and Beck, brother in law Neil Birkett (Audrey), aunt Rosemarie Martz, cousins Karen Leroux (Larry), Carl, Barb, Brenda, Patsy, Bob (Colleen) Martz and families. Along with many close friends, which are far too many to mention but you know who you are. He was predeceased by grandson Andrew Lalonde, Uncle Bernie Martz, cousin Mark Martz, and parents Zita and Andrew Lalonde.
Keith will be remembered for his sense of humour, connection with people, the gift of always making you feel seen, and his gruff exterior with a heart of gold. He was unapologetically and authentically himself. He was described by many as a big teddy bear who was tough on the outside but a softy on the inside. He was larger than life and there was never any guessing where you stood with Keith because he would tell you the truth even if you didn’t want to hear it. His wit and jokes were always good for a laugh and he knew random facts about pretty much any topic. He made friends everywhere he went and you never knew when he was just going to show up on your couch.
Over the years, Keith had many sales jobs and built his own petroleum contracting business Beaver Pump Service. He could build and fix anything including building a beautiful log home for the family beside Bird’s Hill Park. He loved his toys, anything with a motor and it was always a big surprise when something showed up in the garage or the driveway. There were many snowmobiles, motorcycles, catamarans, sailboats, ski + cruise boats and most recently his scooter and electric bike. He especially loved his boats and the many years spent at Lake of the Woods, which was his favourite place. There was not a dock left untouched from his visits. He was like “the wind” saying he would be right back and you would not see him until many hours later.
Keith was most proud of his family and always had a picture of his wife Karen as the screensaver on his phone. He would share stories and pictures of his children and grandchildren with anyone who would listen. Keith was very grateful for his friends, always reaching out to help if you needed something.
We find comfort knowing he is enjoying the biggest welcome home party with the people he loved and missed the most. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Oakbank Baptist Church, 26033 Springfield Road in OakBank on Saturday, December 9 at 11am with lunch to follow. Please join us to celebrate Keith and share a memory or a funny story, we know there will be a lot of those!
