Kay slipped away peacefully at Willow Lodge on March 28, 2023, to join her beloved husband, Aubrey.
Kay loved the story of being born in Tatamagouche on her parents’ kitchen table during a thunder storm and how her birth blew out the lights – so she was born by lamp light!
She was born to the late Thomas L. Simpson and Rena Mae (Carruthers) Simpson and married the love of her life, Aubrey T. Mattatall. They became lifelong residents of Tatamagouche and were parents to two children.
Kay loved her community and believed as did her husband, that volunteering made it a better place. She was an active member of Sharon United Church, a long running President of the Branch #64 Royal Canadian Legion Aux., St. John Ambulance, Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital Aux. and close to her heart, a long time Girl Guide Leader and later a member of the Guider’s Guild.
Kay loved the history of Tatamagouche, helping preserve it by working with the Archives with much of her picture collection being donated to the Archives. Kav’s first job in the late 40’s 50’s 60’s was with Maritime Tel & Tel working the old “plug board» – not a great job working the board in a thunder storm!
Surviving family members include her brother, Garry Simpson (Dianne); sister, Doreen Langille; daughter, Gwendolyn Busby (Randy); son, Leon and daughter in law, Mary Mattatall. Kay was thrilled and proud to be a grandmother to Rosemarie Mattatall (Scott Dobson), lan Mattatall (Kerri Coulter Mattatall) and Captain Brad Busby (Brittany Grenning Busby.)
Kay’s eyes would light and a big smile when seeing pictures and hearing stories of her five great-grandsons, Tyler and Koby Dobson, Adam and Emerson Mattatall and Deacon Busby as well as many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by husband, Aubrey (1989); sisters, Shirley (aged eight months), Marion Komarnisky (Morris), Jessie; brothers, Thomas Jr. and James.
The Canadian Legion Branch #64 will conduct a Tribute Service beginning at 1:45pm, Saturday, April 8th in Sharon United Church, Tatamagouche. Celebration of Life Service will follow at 2pm with Linton Worrell officiating. Interment will be held in Lockerby Memorial Cemetery. Reception will follow the service in Tatamagouche Legion Branch #64 to which all are invited.
Donations in her memory may be made to the Willow Lodge Garden Fund or charity of choice. Special thanks to the RN’s, LPN’s and CCA’s of Lynwood for your loving care – be proud of what you do.
Arrangements are under the care and direction of Coulter’s Funeral Home, Tatamagouche.
