~~~~~~~~~~
It is with saddened hearts that we announce the passing of the indomitable Kathryn (Kathy) May Wiltse on November 21, in Brockville, Ontario. Kathy was the eldest daughter of the late Harold and Ada Kellar. She was born prematurely, which is possibly the only time our mother was early for anything in her life. The doctors told her parents that it was unlikely their first child would survive, but Mom would prove them wrong for the next 86 years. And, yes, she was forever late for everything for the rest of her days.
Predeceased by her patient and loving husband, Ronald Wiltse, and her beloved son, Keith Bertrim, who worshipped our mother. We know our late brother was her favourite because he told us so. But Mom will still be missed by her other favourite children Randy Bertrim (Hilary), Tammy Dopson, and Linda Dopson.
Mom’s sisters Joan Kellar, Leta Ruth Kellar, and Jean Walton (Charles Harrison) will, without a doubt, immeasurably miss their oldest sibling. She’ll also be dearly missed by her grandchildren and great grandchildren who were fiercely cherished by their Grandma Wiltse.
In addition to her family, Kathy’s other great love was for singing country music wherever and whenever possible. She and her guitar made guest appearances in the summer kitchen at the farm, on stages for birthday parties, weddings, county fairs, fundraising telethons, Canada Day festivals, and for many care homes in the area. Kathy and her bandmates played a lot of tunes over the years, always making someone’s day better. Mom had the best smile and eyes that sparkled when she laughed. She loved road trips and taking the rail to visit friends and family. Mom was a tireless canvasser for the Canadian Cancer Society. She never used a measuring cup, but she made legendary baked pies. Mom found a peacefulness in the barnyard and took pride in growing her near 10-foot-tall sunflowers. She adored her RUM as well, which is to say she joined the Rural United Ministries where she made many friends through choir which turned into a Sunday morning breakfast club at the Creekside Diner in town. There was so much more to Mom than what is written here. These are just some of the highlights and in part, why her absence has been so immeasurably felt by so many. Mom developed dementia in her later years. A terrible affliction that turned her into a time traveler who could only live in the moment. For as long as she could hold a guitar she kept playing, even as her illness progressed. And she sang to us at the end of every visit. We are so utterly grateful for the compassion shown to her while in care at Sherwood Park Manor. The night she passed; they gave her a wonderful send-off. And then we sent her to the wrong funeral home, thus creating the possibility that she could be late for her own funeral. That said, the funeral will be a private one followed by cremation.
Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life for Kathy on Thursday, December 28th, 2023, from
1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the St. James Masonic Hall, 3904 Bethel Rd, Brockville. Please feel free to drop in to enjoy some music and food (you are welcome to bring a prepared dish or your holiday leftovers). In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Canadian Cancer Society, to Sherwood Park Manor, or to The Alzheimer’s Society Leeds & Grenville Branch.
