August 2, 1966 – January 25, 2024

It is with profound sadness and broken hearts that we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, sister, sister-in-law, daughter-in-law and aunt Kathy Maria Whitten.
Kathy was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Eleanor Burke, father-in-law, Clyde Whitten, brother, Bruce Burke and brother-in-law, Errol Janes and sister-in-law Paula White. She leaves to mourn her devoted husband, Sam and beloved son, Jonathan, brothers Craig (Big Bro) (Lynette), Tony (Donna), devoted sister and best friend Joanne, sister Lori Thorne (Larry), mother-in-law, Agnes Whitten, brothers-in-law Bob (Jacqulina), Greg (Marylou), Damian (Heather), Monty (Paula-deceased), Bud (Cathy), Phillip (Jennifer – her bestie), Aaron (Lisa), sisters-in-law Margaret (Ed), Esther (Shawn), Rosalind, Mildred (Doug), Kay (Rick), Rosemary (Gerard) and Phyllis (Wayne), special nieces who were near and dear to Kathy, Melanie Lake (Jason, Finley and Harlow), Charlee and Emma Whitten and numerous nephews and nieces and the Smith, Newhook and Legrow families. Kathy also leaves to mourn special friends Marg Burke, Bev Ellis, Rosalind Mitchell, Denise and Terry Hanlon, Gord and Kim McDonald, Mary King, Ralph and Kay Newell, nursing colleagues, her friends in Ottawa and friends too many to mention but you know who you are and that she cared deeply for you all.
Kathy grew up in Pouch Cove and went on to start her calling in the nursing profession and devoted her life to always putting her patients first. She met the love of her life, Sam, and they had a wonderful son who is the light of their lives and spent 34 years together in a beautiful life. Kathy had many passions including curling (especially when Brad Gushues team was playing), Blue Jays baseball, playing darts on Saturday nights, taking extra pleasure when she could beat Phillip and Gord and of course spending time with her beloved dog, Byndy.
The family would like to thank the Torbay Volunteer Fire Department for their quick response, the paramedics, and the staff of the ICU at the Health Sciences Center for their kindness and care to Kathy and the family during this stressful time.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ronald McDonald House can be made in Kathy’s name at the Newfoundland Chapter rmhcnl.ca/donate/ As Kathy requested, there will be no visitation and a funeral mass and celebration of life will take place at Holy Trinity Church in Torbay NL on Monday, January 29, 2024, at 10 AM.
