McKay, Kathryn Elizabeth (nee Kowal)
Passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at Juravinski Hospital with her loving family by her side and holding her hand as she gently left this world. After ten years of suffering from a rare skin disease, she received a recent diagnosis of cancer which ultimately led to her passing. She will be deeply missed by her loving husband Brad, her devoted children Eric and Jess (Ryan), and brother Stefan (Jeanette). Predeceased by her parents (Edward and Mary Kowal) and her grandad (Eric Ellis).
Kathryn was born in Sheffield, England. She was raised on Broxholme Road where she attended elementary school nearby and enjoyed the benefits of the many nearby parks, the fish and chip shop at the bottom of the street and the enduring love of an extended family and many local aunties and uncles in her formative years.
She moved with her family to Canada in 1968 settling in Windsor, Ontario. While in high school, she developed a deep love of music through singing and playing guitar. She joined two friends and formed a folk group which played at public functions and events throughout the city. Kathryn attended University of Windsor with a focus in drama and French and where she appeared in community theatre productions. Her love of learning and her caring nature led her to Althouse College in London where she trained to be an elementary school teacher with her teachable subjects being her favourites of drama and French. In 1977, she started her professional career with a teaching position in Cambridge, Ontario where she developed many meaningful relationships with friends and where she met her husband.
After being married in 1981, Kath and Brad moved to Toronto, then Hamilton, ultimately settling in Burlington where Eric and then Jess were born and where they raised their children, met more people who would become lifelong friends and had some of their happiest family experiences. Together as a family they travelled every summer creating memories that would last a lifetime. Active in her children’s upbringing, Kathryn engagingly supported all of their activities whether it was dance, theatre, music and more. As might be expected, she was an active participant in her children’s homework assignments and exam preparation all the way from elementary school to high school and through university. She woke up every day with a positive outlook on life, a joy to her smile and devoted herself to the betterment of others whether it be family, close friends, or strangers she just met. She made the world a better place through her love, kindness, and wisdom.
