Obituary
Her “joie de vivre” was not crushed by the weight of years. Kathleen Mary Achong, ‘Kay,’ was a mother, aunt, Nurse, spirited feminist and, independent woman with a no nonsense personality. She read widely and travelled just as far. She left Footprints in the soil of this earth from the Caribbean to Japan to Turkey, but her most solid footing was in her beloved Coote’s Pond.
Kay’s professional career as a nurse began with her training at the St. John’s General Hospital, now the Dr. L A Miller Centre. It was there, during training, that she said her final goodbyes to her father in 1959, and there, she whispered her last words to her daughter in 2023.
She pursued further nursing studies in Vancouver, and Montreal, where she worked at the Jewish General Hospital for many years. Upon retirement, Newfoundland called her home, where she built a second nursing career in St. John’s. After eighteen years, retirement beckoned again. This time she returned to the cove of her birth in Riverhead, St. Mary’s.
Kay was an intergenerational spirit who wove a presence in the lives of her siblings, their children and grandchildren, placing them all at the same level of knowing and friendship. Love and respect flowed her way through those treasured relationships.
Holyrood, St. John’s, and St. Jacques were her travel destinations during retirement, celebrating with family, revelling in music and song, and applying her superb culinary skills to great appreciation. During her quiet hours, one could see her surrounded by books, sculpture, paintings and drawings, enjoying bird watching, walking trails and beaches of an environment she felt deeply connected with, puzzling over the latest crossword, playing cards or peeling back a few tickets.
Ever present in her life was a sharp sense of fashion, a deep love of the arts and a keen awareness of local, national, and international events.
Kay is predeceased by her parents James and Lucy Corcoran, her sisters Marian, Gertrude, Mary, Josephine, Jeanette and brothers Raymond, Thomas and James, and her husband Eamon.
She is survived by her daughter Deanne Achong (Roy Steward), her sister Cecilia Bowen and a large number of treasured nieces, nephews and friends.
Thanks to the kind staff at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, 7 East, and at the Miller Center for their excellent care. Thank you to Cheryl Goulding NP, Todd Squires, and the staff at St. Mary’s Pharmacy for their dedication and service. Gratitude goes to her home care worker/friend Shawna Molloy. Special thanks to Gibbons’ Funeral Home for their kindness and compassion.
Cremation has taken place. Kay will be laid to rest alongside her sister Jeanette in a plot shared with her parents.
Visitation will take place at Gibbons’ Funeral Home, St. Mary’s, on Friday, April 14, from 5 – 8pm. Burial to follow at St. Joseph the Worker Cemetery, Riverhead, on Saturday, April 15, at 3pm, with a reception at the Royal Canadian Legion in Riverhead at 4pm.
