It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Katharine Petersen (née Gottselig) on March 2, 2024, at the age of 90.
She is dearly missed by Neal, her husband of almost 63 years. She is survived by her sons Brent (Monique) and Kenneth, as well as her grandchildren Thomas, Elizabeth, Marie, and James. She was pre-deceased by 11 of her 14 brothers and sisters and is survived by Gabriel, Bert, and John.
She grew up on a farm near Chamberlain, Saskatchewan. She moved to Regina to finish high school at Scott Collegiate, where she enjoyed the library, had time to become the badminton champion, and baked an award-winning apple pie.
After high school, she worked as a long-distance telephone switchboard operator and saved money for nursing studies.
She graduated from the Moose Jaw Providence Hospital in 1955 as a registered nurse and practiced in four provinces and two territories. A career highlight was being a scrub nurse in Dr. John Callaghan’s team for some of Canada’s first successful open heart surgeries in Edmonton.
She had been in the curling clubs in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon. With Neal, they lived in ten places in the first ten years of being married and they settled in Ottawa. She continued to curl and won prizes as the skip for women’s teams.
After her nursing career, she was proud of working in the Prime Minister’s office for the late Right Honourable Brian Mulroney.
Neal and Kathie enjoyed playing contract bridge and her friends praised her for her parties and entertainment.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Humane Society would be appreciated.
A visitation will be at Hulse, Playfair & McGarry – St. Laurent Chapel, 1200 Ogilvie Road, Ottawa, on Thursday, March 7, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The funeral will take place at the Annunciation of the Lord Parish, 2414 Ogilvie Road, Ottawa, on Friday, March 8 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception. A private interment will be held at Beechwood Cemetery.
